It is really amazing how all the basic functions of governance are actively endangered by Donald Trump’s administration. They literally cannot do any of the jobs a government does. America is only chugging along because it takes time to destroy a large functional machine.

Idk. I was into the early DALL-E image generation fad and I’ve used the text generation a fair bit and definitely seen it improve since 2-3 years ago, but I am still not all that impressed? Maybe there’s something wrong with me on that front.

Tbh I do hate that hyperbole has completely perverted the discussion around this because I do think I can make a completely unhyperbolic case for why it is a societal disaster and it is simply the words "worst disinformation vector of the century."

there's this thing where like... a lot of people respond extremely poorly to righteous anger that does not find the perfect spot (one that does not challenge me) and focus on the latter part and deny the motivation for the anger in the first place

Now measures of high school student achievement probably correspond to some measures of GDP growth at least a little. But like… the things that help you grow your economy also help you educate your children so why assume the correlation is causation?

I don’t think tests scores correlate reliably to any meaningful outcomes and to the extent that they do you can’t disentangle the effect of encouragement from the effect of whatever knowledge the test measured.
