Don’t mind me just tracing the gyres. Talk about politics a lot but mostly want to talk about Stevie Wonder and August Wilson. She stay in the hills, he stay in Atlanta, I pay for them both.

If you’re a right wing billionaire who doesn’t like woke but also doesn’t want fascism to get in the way of your profits, the best thing you can do right now is build a faction in the REPUBLICAN party capable of contesting a primary in which the Trumpist vote is split between Don Jr and JD Vance.

Also how sure are we that South Texas belongs in the South and not the West? Texas Gulf Coast is 500% the South but in a lot of ways South Texas might as well be Arizona…

Yeah, I agree. But I also feel like the tension between Heartland and wanting to be a Fancy Sophisticated City is sort of what defines the I-35 corridor. Even Austin to some extent.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
A little ways past Austin San Antonio becomes its own thing too. I would almost move the border or the west to put both Austin and Fort Worth (NOT Dallas) on the border of the West. Bc again Hill Country really is deeply and profoundly Not The South.

OKC, Denton, DFW, Waco, and Austin are all basically the same city to me.

Southern metros that try to make themselves more interesting by embracing country Western aesthetics, and being really split on if they want to be Good Ole Boys towns or Sophisticated Cities With Culture.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I think the Buc-ee’s corridor deserves its own designation and frankly it should stretch all the way up to OKC, which is pretty much just another Dallas, tho OKC is also on the border of another thing that goes up towards Kansas.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
I’m tempted to argue that the I-35 corridor deserves its own subcultural grouping bc Dallas and Austin are, sorry, deeply similar cities and imo quite different from the surrounding “TX Heartland” area but maybe I’m being picky about my own experience.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
Witchita Falls is basically a Southern City, tho it is also basically an Oklahoma city (and not just bc of the name). But I don’t feel that Hill Country is quite in the South the way even Dallas is.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
I might have drawn the western boundary closer to Fort Worth and Austin, if anything. To me Hill Country is in the West, not the South.

The Texas bit is accurate. Pretty much any map that acknowledges that East Texas is just West Louisiana is gonna be a winner in my book. And I like that Houston was put in a parallel gulf region to NOLA but not the same one. That feels right. And yes, TX is half Southern, half Western.

Also very interesting that Buffalo gets lumped in with Detroit and Cleveland and Chicago etc as a Great Lakes city. I think I sort of agree. At least, you can feel that Buffalo has a distinctly more Chicago-y feel than the Finger Lakes or Rochester or certainly Albany.

I like this! What is this New Piedmont band tho. Is it basically just “Southern cities that are getting rich, educated, and integrated”?

This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.

There’s a lot in here that deserves a pull quote, but this is the most egregious. I need people to recognize the gravity of the situation here in Chicago;

"The ones that are getting out are coming home to no home," Watson said.
According to her, after the raid occurred, building management stole or threw out residents belongings, including visas and important documents.

ICIRR is still trying to determine the identities of all the people detained in the raid. Castro said that the organization usually can do that by following up with family members or loved ones. "In this instance, there was nobody left to work with," she said. The only detainee name they're sure of is that of a person who passed their Venezuelan passport to a neighbor as they were being taken away.

Is the CES data not as reliable as I was told it is, or am I not paying attention to election analysis or is everybody just ignoring it bc it doesn’t really comport with any popular 2024 election narrative besides “Hispanic Americans are moving right”?

This is so much fun, I need a Prince and an MJ and a Stevie. Gwendolyn Brooks is kinda the Stevie too. But maybe someone else.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
Where do we put Rita Dove? Maybe Rita Dove is a bit of a Whitney too.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
I don’t have an Al Green either, hmmm.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
I’m trying not to get in trouble by talking about poets that have already found my skeets about them but someone is obviously, OBVIOUSLY the Donny Hathaway.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
Who is the Patti of poetry is a really fun question lmao. Like the “for the fuck of it” of poetry.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
The timing doesn’t quite work out but I would call Patricia Smith the Gladys. Like she has a way of singing that will make any song work.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
Terrance Hayes is sorta weirdly the Whitney.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
Obviously Gwendolyn Brooks is the Aretha.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
And if I said Jericho Brown is the Luther of contemporary poetry, what then?

The gap between foretelling disasters and actually preventing them is basically the miracle of management, and people often are not properly paid for that crossing.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
This actually kinda breaks my heart bc one can imagine 12 year old JD Vance believing if God was sufficiently strong and awesome he’d fix his mom.
csilverandgold.bsky.social
That is very very very much the group to watch in 2028. If Dems can hold that group while also giving moderate minorities something to vote for instead of just vote against, all good. If Vance makes inroads there with slightly more genteel fascism, really really bad sign.
