The problem with the so-called "nonviolence" of the Civil Rights Era is that it is misnarrated. The retelling in the "American myth of progress" version of the Civil Rights movement was that it was completely nonviolent.

That is not true. Plus let's call it its full name "nonviolent direct action"
I wonder how this will turn out

The fact that strawberries aren't a "berry" while bananas are a "berry" has always bothered me

Huey P Newton had the courage in 1966 (exactly 60 years ago) to do what we're thinking about doing today.

He established a militia and political party to protest the oppressive conditions of his neighborhood and his people which spread throughout the entire country.

He would've been 84 today

Btw, Professor Berry also co-founded the Free South Africa Movement. It was the single most consequential and successful movement by Black Americans to appear after the Civil Rights Movement.

Still a living elder, she turns 88 today ❤️🖤💚

I won't be watching the documentary, because I never watched the show.

however, since she's the main subject, this was the moment I fell in love with Tyra Banks. I thought she was cute on Fresh Prince, but I used to carry this magazine with me everywhere lol.

I wonder what I did with it 🤔

As it's been a somber day of an elder transitioning into the ancestral realm, we celebrate the birth date of another ancestor:

Huey P Newton, founder of the Black Panthers was born 84 years ago today.

And Mary Frances Berry, lawyer & historian who reintroduced us to Callie House, turns 88 today

This....

is the moment when I first found out that Jesse Jackson was really him. Himothy Jackson!

In a small fact that did make me smile a bit today,

At the age of 84, Jesse Jackson passed this morning...

on the very day Huey P Newton would've turned 84.

I like to believe that coincidences are the ancestors making meaning

Again I say....listen to his "Nation Time" speech.

Still a rousing oratory to this day
History will be kind to Jesse Jackson. Today is his 84th birthday.

And if you weren't there....you just dont get it.

You wanna see how Jesse used to give it up? Skip to the 17min 50sec mark and watch young Jesse tear the house down

Happy Birthday Brotha Jackson

Jesse Jackson is gonna get slandered a lot today by "the others."

Please dont help them.

The problem with getting old is that you dont get to die young in all your glory and best days.

People get to see your full humanity and imperfections.

Like normal

As of this morning, only one of the men who was standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel that fateful evening is still living.

Since Brother Jesse passed at 84 this morning.

It was really that!

And dont even get me started on Charles Frederick Page, a formerly enslaved man from Louisiana.

I bet you never heard of him either.

Of course not
