You literally cannot pay Americans off the street enough to stand firm against other Americans organized to protect their community. ICE's mercenary losers want an excuse to turn tail

the body language from the feds is embarrassing. they know they’re cooked and the people standing up to them do not fear them.

this is going to get worse before it gets better but it is going to get better

The Supreme Court should rule on Trump defunding blue states so all parties may proceed with clarity
no blue state should pay federal taxes at this point.

This is the natural consequence of choosing to be the kind of person who never apologizes

Best to avoid having a large pool of unemployed or underemployed young men with extensive martial training & experience, & deep bitterness toward civilian government. Ideal, really, if one must navigate a nascent fascist takeover
So to return to this: Mussolini had 200,000 blackshirts for the March on Rome in a country of ~35m. Hitler had 400,000 brownshirts in 1932 in Germany for a population of ~60m.

So around 0.6% of the population.

0.6% of 340m Americans is just over 2 million.

They do not have enough goons.
In 1932, on the eve of seizing power, the Nazi goon army - the Sturmabteiling or SA - numbered 400,000 members. By 1933, it was over two *million.*

DHS has 240,00 employees and lot of those are non-goons who have, you know, real jobs.

File this under "reasons why no jury should assume an ICE officer's injuries occurred in the course of the incident before the court"
you gotta penguin walk to you dumb Florida hicks!

Speaking of Trump Administration harassment that's clearly revenge for old grudges
Looks like ICE is now cracking down on … Native Americans.

This letter was just posted by the chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North/South Dakota:

“Our Nation is a sovereign government and our members are not immigrants. We are not subject to immigration enforcement on our own lands.”

Being a lesbian, filming him, yelling at him, mildly inconveniencing him; there are so many reasons men kill women it's hard to say which one did it for him
One thing Ross’s angle of the shooting reveals is that he had pretty decent evidence that the person he was about to shoot is a Lesbian and I don’t think it’s unwarranted to venture that this influenced his eagerness to kill her

little did we know Sebastian Stan was voted "most asymmetric" in acting school

Trump may not be interested in international law, but ojala international law may be interested in him

The irony here is that red state leaders also see their own states this way. It's brutal extraction all the way down
just really demonstrative of the fact that trump thinks of blue states as being colonial holdings from which real americans may brutalize and extract tribute from
I kind of think the most revealing thing about Trump and his advisors’ view of the economy are the (false) “it’s fine, the economy is doing well in red states” lines from the CEA report that he posted on Truth Social
January 9, 2026 at 11:17 PM
Notably, the Biden Administration made special efforts to ensure that red states & regions were not left behind; we have seen their reward

The simplest explanation is that the lessons JSOC colonels & generals learned in the GWOT were very much not the lessons JSOC lieutenants & captains learned in the GWOT. Feels like it's not a coincidence that McRaven & Dick Marcinko got along like oil & vinegar
There's something to be explored with how their (and for that matter Votel's) JSOC became today's JSOC
it's so funny that McRaven and McChrystal are both dem-coded now

If we treat 2016 as our 1979 we may expect liberatory riots like those in Tehran to arrive around the same time as Halley's Comet
I keep seeing these takes like "why aren't Americans rioting in the streets the way Iranians are" and I think some of you are really aggressively underestimating how bad things have been for how long in Iran when you say stuff like that

If I lived back then, I would wear the special hat
*medieval civilization voice* yes and the one who has the most power will wear a special hat. it will have gold and jewels in it. everyone will imagine how good life would be if they could wear the special hat

They're Nazis, but more than that, they're toddlers
Trump talks about Denmark and Greenland just now: "The fact that they landed a boat there 500 years ago doesn't mean that they own the land."
January 9, 2026 at 9:29 PM
The only thing he thinks when seizing the moment is "but what about ruminating over policy???" because ruminating over policy & the messaging around it is all he's got in his quiver. The idea that you can make a legitimate claim to power & let your policy flow from that claim is alien to him
the fact that this is Yglesias’ only post about ICE murdering an American really just goes to show how his excessively poll-tested popularist philosophy completely fails when faced with a rapidly shifting public narrative

it’s an entirely backwards-looking worldview
January 9, 2026 at 9:25 PM
Same thing
I’m not convinced they actually believe this video to be exculpatory. It reads as more triumphalist to me — i.e., a ‘look what we can do’ vibe meant to shock and numb and intimidate
i just watched this video and the fact that they believe this to be exculpatory is genuinely insane
January 9, 2026 at 7:37 PM
This is the actual position Vance is taking: if you ever end up on the wrong end of their guns, that's your fault. It's pure tyranny.
which means the best position here you can take to justify this, assuming there was contact which again the video doesn't prove, is "it's a righteous shoot if you make any contact with any agent for any reason" which is obviously insane
January 9, 2026 at 7:05 PM
This is why so many in the administration shifted their tune from "domestic terrorist" to "the press is so mean to us!!"
🚨 NEW VIDEO 👇🏽This puts an end to all the lies. Horrific.

They were having a calm exchange seconds before he murdered Renee Good, and she was barely moving and clearly avoiding him.

Stop the lies.

The 21st century is happening with or without us
January 9, 2026 at 6:08 PM
We can fix this by writing better laws that don't give cover to building concentration camps. The overwhelming majority of arrests that justify abolishing ICE are cases that could be handled without any arrests at all if we had the institutional capacity to naturalize them properly
Continue to think that saying “abolish ICE” without explaining how you’ll enforce the law is a trap, but boosting this
"YouGov has ICE at 39% favorable, 52% unfavorable...But this top line really understates the intensity of public backlash to ICE and its tactics. In February 2025, just 19% of Americans held a strongly unfavorable view of ICE. Today, 40% do."
