The entire announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize is very moving. I urge everyone to watch it. It is about defending democracy in dark times. www.youtube.com/live/wrRBGaU...

As a fellow Vzlan I am in tears right now. I don’t share most of her politics, but I think she is amazing.

I think the reason this is significant is that Maria Corina has managed to unite people with very different views in opposition to an increasingly authoritarian government. She is an amazingly brave woman who refuses to give up.

after careful study, I believe only people born between 1975 and 1995 should be allowed to use the internet

Yes, I need to remember to do that.

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

This is Shuranjeet Singh, standing in the allotment at St Michael's C of E Primary School in Handsworth, Birmingham, where he is a governor. I'm sure that Robert Jenrick can immediately tell by looking at him that he's working tirelessly on integration. IIRC, he has a Masters from Oxford.

Say hello to literally the only protesters outside Tory conference this year
Two protesters holding up a sign saying “pedestrianise the M6”

Exactly the same time for me. But it doesn’t feel like it.

I hadn’t been in a while, but it was good to know we had the option 😢

Geese’s new album is fabulous. It has grown on me even more after a week of listening.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Nothing beats a stealth tax!

International fees currently subsidise domestic fees. So the government is taking from the only pot that subsidises educating domestic students in order to subsidise educating domestic students. Cynically, I suspect the logic behind this is to performatively demonstrate toughness towards foreigners.

mariaabreu.bsky.social
It is also partly due to the frozen income tax thresholds, meaning less disposable income, but it happens so gradually and invisibly that most people on regular salaries don’t see it as a cause.

mariaabreu.bsky.social
At least to those who don’t follow the detail closely and might be horrified if they knew. (Maybe that last bit is wishful thinking)

It was the same with Chavez, the comic strongman act was a big part of the narrative that made him so popular. I just fear that (as with Chavez) the absurdity of what is happening obscures the real harm that is being done (until it’s too late).

mariaabreu.bsky.social
There is some of that, but they are also causing (and enabling) real harm.

Children who receive support are more likely to be out-of-work or education, receiving out-of-work benefits, or receiving health-related benefits at age 22.

There is very little evidence on how systems of support could improve these long-term outcomes.
Chart shows outcomes at age 22 for children aged 15 in 2021, by type of support received. Title states: "Children receiving SEND or disability support are more likely to receive support in adulthood and be out of work or not in education."
