It's even worse than this. The subhed will leave the casual reader with the vague impression that he actually has a legitimate claim to it.

Headline presenting this as a real-world question. Rather than as another sign of deepening vortex of narcissistic delusion and detachment from reality.

this is table stakes for anyone who enjoys seeing themselves as a leader of a political party or movement

you do not want to be running in a Democratic primary as the guy who was like "sure Trump has his flaws but let's not go overboard with our criticism." Not next year, not in 2028, not ever.

This is good, from Hakeem Jeffries. More of this please, in every conceivable forum:

"Sycophants who aid and abet the President’s vengeful schemes will not be able to hide from the serious legal consequences of their behavior. They will be held accountable."

And a judge just enjoined this. I feel sorry for these poor troops whose lives are being disrupted for Trump's dictator cosplay.

Yup. Now.

We are witnessing the most lawless behavior by a leader in American history, just daily, extraordinary abuses of power. National Democrats must speak out in a loud and clear voice against Trump's escalating authoritarianism. It is time now.

Very good article Re: Qn: who wins when you bounce voters out of their apathy rut to take sides? …. and the value of liberal democracy messaging this moment needs to win that fight

This powerful JB Pritzker response to Trump's lawless threats is another reminder of what I tried to argue this morning: Pritzker understands Stephen Miller's theory of this moment, and he's responding accordingly:

Trump just got Letitia James indicted despite insiders leaking that the case against her is incredibly weak. He had to get his handpicked stooge to do it. This only shows how corrupt the whole thing truly is:
gregsargent.bsky.social
this does not contradict what I said in any sense -- the refusal of other prosecutors to participate in this and the leaking about how weak the case is still matters! it makes the case less likely to succeed. let's see how far it gets

jfc they are just so completely not up to this, they all have to fucking go

At this point I’d argue that they are actively endangering all of us by refusing to accept the nature of the situation

A good example of Dems not adapting to MAGA war mindset is that they keep telling reporters they can't engage on Trump's military occupations because it's a "trap" to entice them into a losing debate about crime. That concedes too much up front and plays by old rules.

*millions, not billions, though Trump actually did try to shake down the NYT for billions
gregsargent.bsky.social
just hand over tens of billions of dollars every time Trump shits out a new lawsuit against you and it will result in a stampede of new Trump-supporting readers

this is what JB Pritzker is doing, as I tried to detail in my piece

I might end up talking about this graph all day.

I think one thing Dems need to realize is that "Americans" are not buying into the "cities on fire" lies of this admin.

It's JUST Republicans. So if you're a governor of a solidly blue state, or a blue-city mayor, the national story is NOT YOURS.
Gallup poll showing a wild divergence in "is crime rising" over the past two years, w GOP at 90, independents at 68, Dems at 29.

This is great strategy. Creating the illusion of a “trap” sets conditions for compliance. The issue is dictatorship and tyranny. The solution isn’t handwringing about their narrative.

Good formulation from @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com on MAGA treating politics as war and Ds fundamentally not adapting. As I suggest in the piece/thread below JB Pritzker is operating from a similar reading of Miller and that's why he's breaking through.

"The Trump administration is building its case for authoritarian action on a fictional idea of America’s cities [as] wastelands of murder and despair, covered over with a patina of liberal decadence."

Trump's nonstop threats to arrest Dems are also about sleepwalking us into forgetting that free societies don't allow for arbitrary arrests of political opponents.

As @kristyparker.bsky.social says, we need to keep reminding ourselves that this isn't how it works:

I’ll say it again:
I believe the reason Bondi, Miller, Patel etc etc keep acting so defiant is because they’ve all been been told The Felon will blanket pardon everyone who worked for or carried out orders from his administration.

The DOJ minions haven’t been given such assurances.
