The federal Judge Karin Immergut of U.S. District Court in Oregon, a Republican appointed by Trump, in issuing a strong denunciation of Trump (“This is a nation of constitutional law, not martial law”), said that Trump “was untethered from the facts” and “can’t just make up “facts on the ground.”

Oh yeah, I agree this is a huge part of it. But I also think a deep and mistaken calculation about the cultural meaning of Trump's win is also driving this. Some reporting indicates that TV execs were surprised by the pushback that the silencing of Kimmel received out in non-MAGA America, for ex.

Do CBS News executives understand that MAGA will not be in power forever? I genuinely think this is lost on a lot of people. They've gotten scammed by bad actors into believing Trump's 2024 win represented something seismic and even permanent. I predict they'll look back on this as a serious error.

A common talking point in far right publications in the 1970s had to do with a bunch of Cold War executive orders laying out a range of “emergency powers” a POTUS could temporarily take on in a crisis.
