Single family zoning was born from classism and racism (right NIMBY) in the early 1900s. What is hard to comprehend is that left NIMBYs today often defend that exclusionary zoning as a way to stop development, which they believe will limit displacement (a fact free assertion)

Left YIMBY: build anything, especially social housing; protect renters
Left NIMBY: build only social housing; protect renters; developers shouldn’t make a profit
Right YIMBY: build only market rate housing. Property rights
Right NIMBY: build only luxury single family; density and cities are scary

This pro-business/public safety group had just started earning street cred on homelessness when it bafflingly went full Karen on bike lanes and speed bumps, calling the managers at the Legislature to demand a moratorium from on high and bankrolling a couple of City Council candidates to agitate for the interests of suburban commuters. Helping lawmakers steal power from Salt Lake City is the ultimate betrayal. Hopefully that extra parking space was worth their souls.

Great question! My guess is that Cox has (1) more name recognition and (2) has been two-faced so that people are tired of him pretending to be moderate and then signing pretty much everything the legislature sends him

Ironic that Brad Wilson, former GOP Speaker of the House in the Utah Legislature, talks about the name change for the sake of inclusivity, when his party bans DEI initiatives

Dropping Salt Lake City from the name will make the event more inclusive, said Brad Wilson, CEO of the 2034 organizing committee. He noted that the footprint of the sporting events spans 13 venues in five counties.

“We really want everyone in Utah to feel like they’re a part of Team 2034,” Wilson said, “whether they live in our amazing capital city or whether they live in Vernal or Layton.”

This is not unlike people blaming *only* oil companies for climate change- of course, they’re huge polluters. But most of us buy fuel for our cars, gas to heat our home, airplane tickets, etc. We make choices that contribute to emissions

It crazy how many people in Utah don’t know that the primary cause of air pollution during inversions is cars. Part of it is likely honest lack of knowledge, but part is probably denial because driving is inevitable for so many people
