@sabinaleonelli.bsky.social gives a fantastic talk on how not to understand the idea of open science qua unlimited use / access to commodified knowledge and data — contrasting the legacy of Popper’s view of open society with Bergson’s ‘humane openness’ at the Bohr’s conference in Copenhagen.

The Bohr Open World conference kicks off with Frank von Hippel remembering the kindness of the Bohr family in hosting his family on the way out of Nazi Germany and on the 1972 US-Soviet Treaty for the control of ballistic missiles and following Gorbachev’s move in nuclear arms control.

Sorry to miss you Phil! Enjoy Barcelona.

Fascinating morning visiting the Niels Bohr Archive - with Bohr’s handwritten diagram of the atom, a model of the box used in the 1930 Solvay debate with Einstein, and even Bohr’s pipe still smelling of tobacco! 🤩

Look forward to seeing you Federica — and very much look forward to @sabinaleonelli.bsky.social talk too on open science!

Yes Bohr studied philosophy as an UG student with Harald Høffding who was a scholar of Kierkegaard. Those were the days when physicists studied philosophy as part of their curriculum….

I will be celebrating World Philosophy Day this week by giving a talk in Copenhagen on the profound influence of Kierkegaard’s philosophy on Niels Bohr’s view on the nature of physical reality and the ideal of an open world in his 1950 letter to the UN. @apotochnik.bsky.social makes the important point that the Vienna Circle had also a conception of the public role of their philosophy. Some great pictures and quotes on the slides. Is this material published, Angela? I wish I was taking screenshots. Thank you for a fantastic talk!
Listening to the first panel on history of #philsci in CEE. Inspiring that so many colleagues around the world tuned in. A wonderful first talk by Marta Sznajder on Janina Hosiasson (her heartbreaking story below). Now Angela Potochnik on the role of Marie Neurath (Reidemeister) in the Vienna Circle

A very thought-provoking afternoon with Robert Northcott discussing his excellent book with us and presenting some more recent work on the philosophy of history — the role of singular causal inference in explaining historical events. #philsci

Today at @schoolofppls.bsky.social we are also hosting Robert Northcott at 4pm in 7 George Square with a talk based on his new book ‘Science for a Fragile World’ which we read in our reading group: academic.oup.com/book/60508?l...
