@iandunt.bsky.social and @dorianlynskey.bsky.social read Karl Marx's hilarious self evaluation 🤣

"A machine condemned to devour books and throw them in a changed form on the dunghill of history."

My son, doing politics A-level, uses @originstorypodcast.bsky.social as research. I have however advised him not to describe Marx as a ‘messy bitch’ in his coursework, regardless of how accurate it plainly is.

Oh you're in for a treat. I really loved that era. They fumble the ending but there's some great stuff on the way there.

I feel there is a difference between stock market crashes, which is what this is shaping up to be, and financial crises, which are usually the result of leverage (debt), particularly leverage that is not readily visible beforehand. The former --> recession. The latter --> banking collapse

Sort of but the major difference here is the institutions in question aren’t banks and the risky assets don’t eventually drill down to real people’s homes
iandunt.bsky.social
Yes good point. In other words the difference is that these guys can be allowed to fail
iandunt.bsky.social
I'm sure financial journalists can correct me if I'm wrong, but it also seems reminiscent of how very large risky assets were concentrated in the balance sheet of a handful of too-big-to-fail institutions.

“With each passing day, the AI space looks more and more like the USA’s home mortgage securitization at the peak of the 2007-8 housing bubble with its overlapping series of capital conveyor belts.”

Yes good point. But god, imagine if I'd had to show my face, I'd have been fucked.

I was lucky to be there at the best moment for it, when it was full of potential. I dunno how someone starting a career now would find their audience, particularly on the liberal left.

I now find myself willing the death of social media and using it myself far less. But there is actually a kind of privilege in that.
iandunt.bsky.social
Met my partner, got a book contract, found an audience, built a career, made countless friends, been endlessly delighted and educated by people smarter than myself. I'm not sure it makes up for the corrosion of democracy exactly, but I've personally had a pretty good time.

Once again, I am asking where on earth the Short money *goes* and what they are spending it on. They are not doing meaningful parliamentary scrutiny. They are somehow less credible, spending-wise, than Reform, who are are a shoestring operation!

Good to see the Conservative Party committed to keeping the deficit down by *checks notes* spending £2 billion giving tax breaks for private education, creating a massive new deportation force and pledging to maintain pensioner benefits.

"Antifa has been around in various iterations for almost 100 years in some instances, going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany."

Genuinely outstanding news, even if this news story can apparently only report on it by cramming it full of every objection imaginable. People should be able to drink as late as they please. And by 'people' I mean me.

The cast list for Celebrity Traitors is ridiculously impressive. I never know who the fuck anyone is on celebrity things, but I know almost all these people. It's making me feel quite young.

Opinion | Starmer has not prioritised growth, not really. He has done what British governments have been doing for over a decade: prioritising anti-immigration policy and focusing on growth only where it does not interfere with it

Still I'm sure it'll be fine. It's not like those expectations are based on a completely unproven product with deranged costs and hysterical levels of hype.

I mean it fails as an understanding of the simple value and meaning of this one human life that is all any of us get on this benighted planet.

But it *also* fails as a basic analysis of where the British economy is thriving and how to support that for desperately-needed growth.
