Oh no. Sometimes the obituaries just seem to come in like waves. Generations pass, I suppose. The water gets closer.

I won’t make the obvious joke but I will ask her name

I know it doesn't really mean that but it works very well with your name - it has a lovely Victorian ring to it.

I find these stories of stories of generational stretch so fascinating. That idea that your mind and body is, in some way, not living among its contemporaries.

I'm the result of my father's second marriage, so he was 56 when I was born (fortunately he made 96 in the end!) but he was born in 1904, and my grandfather in 1865.

So I was only the third generation in a century!

The mother of my great grandma, who held me as a baby, was alive when Charlotte Bronte was alive.

A friend of a friend who I’ve known for years and is only a little bit older than me told me tonight that his dad was born in 1899.

I cannot emphasize enough how much the 1915 Italian adventure film THE JOCKEY OF DEATH lives up to its advertising campaign

Jean Béraud's picture of a gentleman's club (1904) is painted in a few warm, deep colours. There is no central figure, and the men are positioned in such a way that their faces are either partly or entirely hidden. Privacy in a private club.

Some thoughts on on the Manchester synagogue attack:

1. This is the first deadly attack against Jews in the UK in my lifetime. That's a big contrast with the US and France, which have seen numerous fatal antisemitic terrorist attacks in recent decades.
