(Honestly, Wilhelm should be Gulielmus in Latin, and was in some sources. Wilielmus seems to have come from some very scrupulous translator.)
dtmooreeditor.bsky.social
Parallel. Willelmus in Latin becomes Williame in Norman French and Guillaume in Central French.

"Gu" = "W" (like "Qu" = "Wh") is a Romance/Germanic transition reflecting pronunciation, it's also reflected in the questioning words "quoi" = "what," "quand" = "when" etc.

but rendered into modern English more directly from its Germanic roots, it would be

"willing helmet"

which certainly in the UK would carry a very different energy than intended... 😏

*wiljô here means something like "loyal" or "devoted," while *helmaz is being used figuratively to mean "guardian" or "protector" (your helmet being your most important piece of armour in battle), so William means "Loyal Guardian," which is rather nice
dtmooreeditor.bsky.social
*Wiljahelmaz is a compound - this is super-common with Germanic names, like Ethelred ("noble" + "counsel") or Osric ("divine" + "rulership")

it's constructed from the words *wiljô ("will, desire") and *helmaz ("helmet")

it's taken quite a meandering journey to get here! theoretically *Wiljahelmaz could have entered English directly, probably as *Wilhelm (pronounced with a "W" rather than a "V" as it is German), but there's no record of it doing so - it's not used as an English name until after the Norman Conquest

bit of etymology:

although William is originally Germanic, it entered English from the Norman French Williame, from the Latin Willelmus (the Latin double ll picking up an i when it entered French, as it tends to), which in turn is from the Germanic Wilhelm, from a proto-Germanic name *Wiljahelmaz

Heh. There's a screencapped tweet about how everyone hates AI until their homework is due, and people are commenting to refute it with their examples of mad, last-minute assignments that got high marks, and yes, I too have an adult ADHD diagnosis.

I genuinely don't even think they resent thinking itself; they just don't believe it exists. All they see is someone _not working_, and the idea that this might in some nebulous way be _part_ of the working process doesn't make any sense to them.

me trying to teach bechamel:

her: how much butter?
me: [squints, cups hand] that much?
her: how much flour?
me: like, it should *look* like the same amount, if that makes sense?

I posted on here a few months back about my toddler once throwing a fit because her banana was broken (and she didn't want a new banana, she wanted me to fix *that* banana), and fully five people responded "oh, god, broken bananas!" 😆

Sympathies! I find the whole medieval/Christian era of philosophy pretty dire - either do philosophy or theology, don't try and do both. My medieval studies were all about the literature.

After the Resurrection, Thomas both was and was not an Apostle until he touched Jesus's wounds and collapsed the probability wave.

I mean, the existence of "Doubting Thomas" suggests that uncertainty applies?
