The reason Capra and de Laurentiis built a film studio in Wilmington was because it had an interstate highway, an airport, no union requirement for working – and ELEVEN theater companies, meaning actors and technical crew already there.

In most film towns the actors put on their resumes "can do Southern accents"; in Wilmington it was "can do New York accents." I know that because I used to write those resumes for them.

The reason I bombed out of my audition was that I couldn't come up with vernacular dialogue a second after reading the literal. Also bear in mind AnimEigo had Wilmington's stable of trained screen/theater actors, not the amateur, supposed anime fans who dub today.

The actors were provided dry, literal TLs in captions the company president's Japanese wife provided and had to improvise normal sounding English but in those days that didn't mean making it palatable for prudes.

The dubbers lived in coastal North Carolina and worked for AnimEigo which was located there in Wilmington. I know this because I lived there at the time and worked with at least one of them. I even auditioned for Keiichi in Ah! My Goddess.

One white woman with minimal knowledge of other languages gets on Oprah to insist "squaw" is a derogatory anatomical synecdoche, and landmarks have to be renamed regardless of the truth. Patronizing is more insidious than demonizing.

I live in Northern Arizona and my 3 decades' observation is that comfortable, illiterate white people speaking "on behalf of" natives conflate tribal customs, misunderstand terms, invent new meanings without linguistic qualifications, and outright fabricate societal aspects for their own reasons.
