Not a real octopus, but a real dad. Software Engineer, but I like to write. GenAI should go back into the hole from whence it came.

In the same vein, people also use it to shift accountability. "Oh, something in my email was wrong? That was just the silly machine 🤷‍♂️ What can you do?"

It's like the guy who put out a summer reading list that was mostly not real books: his response was 'aw man, the *one* time I didn't proofread!'

If you're looking for a short horror read this October, I would highly recommend Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." Originally published in the New Yorker in 1948, but like all great art is extraordinarily relevant today.

“The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson
Fiction, from 1948: “The people had done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions; most of them were quiet, wetting their lips, not looking around.”

I understand there are concerns about the overall effectiveness of the Orphan Crushing product, but as we Crush more Orphans, the product will become more viable.

CHATGPT: I understand where you're coming from. You worked really hard to get here, and now it's time to enjoy the fruit of your labors.

ISILDUR: So I should keep it? Elrond says I shouldn't

CHATGPT: The ring is precious. Sometimes friends don't have your best interests at heart.

It'll be interesting to see if this differs in the Buffy sequel, which seems to be showrun by women (I haven't looked deep enough to know how much influence Whedon will have).

I feel personally attacked.

People are remarkably bad at decentering and really trying to understand _why_ other people think differently. Their only possible conclusion is that any reasonable person acting in good faith must agree with them, so anyone who doesn't must be unreasonable or acting in bad faith (or both).

It's all tied up with the same ideas behind the myth of 'cancel culture' for many people (red and blue...). They've believed for so long that the people who disagreed with them were manipulated to disagree.

It's a reference to an old tweet about how people will react to someone expressing a like for something to mean they hate something else.
Text that says:

The following tweet by Colle Bravo on October 23, 2017 received over 146,000 likes:

"Twitter is the only place where well articulated sentences still get misinterpreted. You can say 'I like pancakes' and somebody will say 'So you hate waffles?' No bitdh. Dats a whole new sentence. Wtf is you talkin about."

He decided to approach "How much f*in' money do you need to make?" empirically rather than rhetorically.

I mean, it's not as if 4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for flag, item d says anything about the flag and wearing apparel.

"No more superficial individual expression," he said, and with a soft pop, the superficial individual vanished and was not seen again.

"Is he correct?" is a much scarier horror story than I was prepared for as we enter October.

Dunno where you are in the midwest, but if you find yourself just southwest of St Louis in Marthasville, MO, Thierbach Farms has several rows of trees.
An apple tree in an orchard with neat rows of trees has several apples on the ground near it, but few on the branches with a placard partially hidden in the brances saying "Jonathan"

This is what I think about when people approach many current issues as novel

The idea was later weakened in a case that decided that incendiary speeches by Klan leaders advocating lynching was protected because the 'lawless action' wasn't 'imminent' enough.
