HAHA i was surprised by how not annoyed i was actually, bc reposts of things without attribution chains often bug me a lot due to how they create points of failure in online communication

It’s because Google translate automatically and mistakenly decided it’s a sentence in Spanish!
In Spanish, “soy _____” would have the meaning “i am _______”!

this didn’t do numbers on my Twitter at all btw but i just saw today another acct reposted it to twt and it got 40k notes. honestly good for them, if i got 40k notes on Twitter I’d be very annoyed and also probably get found by one million irls

“gyuunyuu” is usually milk, yes. living in Japan i almost always hear that and never “miruku”.

when i experiment with it, Google translate seems to usually turn milk into gyuunyuu, but sometimes turns it into miruku like this, depending on the sentence.

relayed: onedrive memories used to be a popup jumpscare that would appear right on my screen even if i had my laptop in public or something, thank good i figured out how to turn it off

that was indeed what i was trying to do (I was in fact googling for an entry in a dictionary or that sort of thing and didn’t even intend to open the translator)

but the auto-detect feature decided otherwise and it was funny

how odd, i tried it and get that for soy leche too but then leche on its own as well as milk inside an english phrase both translate to 牛乳 as expected. a little curious abt what hallucination inside the machine brain is leading to this

the translator noticed that too, the explicability of that part really tickles me — that’s why it’s written out phonetically as the English word ‘milk’ (ミルク, miruku) instead of actually turned into the japanese word for milk. presumably if it was “soy leche“ and fully in Spanish we’d get 私は牛乳です

yeah

the stuff in the other reply is true, we mention to our jp ESOL students to be aware that even though they’ve heard ‘watashi wa’ is ‘I am’, it’s not applicable to this ‘as for me’ use, don’t say I Am Coffee

but in this case it’s a direct result of the translator trying to say I Am Milk

lol, i wrote a followup tweet explaining this in case my japanese followers saw this but neglected to do so in English 😅 (didn’t expect that many people to see it…)
I was so flabbergasted that all I could do was mutter “watashi wa milk desu…” to myself in silent wonder and hit post

yeah the fact translators usually turn I Am ____ into 私は_____ is one of those lil subtle unnaturalisms

milk could more naturally introduce itself as ミルクです
or if it was a business milk possibly ミルクと申します
