What an awful fucking story
New from me:

Elite law firms, multiple media outlets, the D.C. attorney general, and a group of parents accused a teacher of molesting 15 kids. They were wrong.

This piece is two-and-a-half years in the making. And as you'll see, it took some incredible turns, even as I was reporting it.
Accusing Jordan Silverman
A D.C. teaching assistant was accused of molesting up to 15 kids. Multiple law enforcement agencies cleared him. But his nightmare was just beginning.

Australia and the U.K. are great markets to view the EV battle. Rich nations, but not much in the way of local champions (esp. Australia). No big tariffs.
Limit the damage, buy some time. Maybe the tariffs go away after Trump, but these countries will presumably shift their economies and politics toward China.
Yeah, I was thinking of the broader Geely Group, including Volvo, Zeekr, etc.

With Geely booming and Tesla set to see a post-Q3 drop-off, will get interesting on the BEV front.
Good point on the Asia "deals." I was trying to cover a number of topics in limited space.
Geely is the world's No. 2 EV maker (including PHEVs) and absolutely booming. Not sure about BEV sales but it must be getting close to Tesla for No. 2 (esp. after Tesla's Q3 one-off).
Meanwhile, it's peak earnings week. Meta/Microsoft/Google/Amazon artificial intelligence comments and capex plans have enormous implications for AI, which is leading the stock market and economy.

The Fed is set to cut rates on Wed., with markets betting on a Dec. move as well. 2/2
Futures loom amid huge news.
A China trade deal seems close ahead of a Trump-Xi meeting. Trump makes several Asia trade deals with Brazil talks set to start - a day after hiking Canada tariffs. Argentina is holding midterm elections. 1/2

A Tesla earnings call tidbit, or lack thereof.

For a second straight call, Tesla didn't mention the "unboxed" manufacturing process. Unboxed, w/the goal of halving production costs, is key for the Cybercab. Elon Musk did say Cybercab production starts in Q2 2026.

"Unboxed" manufacturing hasn't been mentioned for the last two Tesla earnings calls.

Tesla misses views ... but hey, Q3 was a one-off anyway.

Elon Musk is on deck with the conference call due to start at 5:30 p.m. ET.

The stock market dived Friday on Trump's tariff threats. Investors should have cut some exposure, and ready to do more if the selling continues.

Oracle AI World starts Monday. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and Taiwan Semi earnings are this week.

Tesla tumbled, but the chart may be constructive. 2/2
Buckle up: Dow futures open at 6 p.m. ET. amid whipsaw U.S.-China news.

President Trump says "don't worry about China" after his late Friday move to impose an extra 100% tariff on Chinese goods. 1/

Trump thinks Portland is in flames and gasoline is below $2. Is he watching 2020 documentaries as current news?
Trump: "Portland, I mean -- every time I look at that place it's burning down. There are fires all over the place. When a store -- there are very few of them left -- but when a store owner rebuilds a store they build it out of plywood. They don't put up storefronts anymore. They just put wood up."
Take *that* New York Times!
Samantha Wynn Greenstone knows her husband is gay. Yet they’ve been in a committed monogamous relationship for nearly 10 years.

They’re not alone. A new crop of couples are openly speaking about their mixed-orientation marriages, divorced from sexual attraction but not love. https://wapo.st/4nQtDmk
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit new highs Wed. on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's AI comments. NVDA rose in a buy zone, Broadcom flashed a buy signal, while AMD surged. PWR, CRWD, SNOW are also in buy areas. TSLA has a new buy point. Taiwan Semi sales, Delta earnings are due.

So, Cybercab or no, Tesla's fortunes - and especially TSLA's fortunes - rest in self-driving more than ever.

It's a little puzzling that Tesla's cheap EV launch stepped on the FSD v14 release. 4/4
But after this, there's nothing really left in Tesla's EV pipeline. Yes, the Cybercab, but that obv. needs true self-driving. It also needs the unboxed manufacturing process. Tesla seems to be making "unboxed" progress, but may not be ready and the savings may not be there. 3/
A ~$5,000 discount in China, Europe, other markets may work fine. I don't know what the demand will be or how much they will cannibalize the "real" Y/3 ... but the margins should be similar. 2/
Thoughts on Tesla's new cheap Model Y and 3, some of which is in the story link.

Don't see how this does well in the U.S. The cheap Y/3 offer a lot less and are effectively more expensive than the regular Y/3 were with the tax credit. 1/

Hi all, just sent out this free post to explain what matters (and what does not) in the Ukrainian campaign against Russian oil refineries. It discusses why the campaign now seems more successful, but also what else needs to happen to have a greater strategic effect. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Quite a number of trapped-in-Tesla deaths. EV maker recently said it'll finally address the design issues, but could face significant liability as cases slowly work through the courts.

In the meantime, when riding in a Tesla, know your exit strategy!

Record Tesla deliveries are a sell-the-news event. TSLA had run up ahead of the Q3 delivery figures, but shares have mostly been rally on self-driving hopes.

Liberal Democrats can make this happen in the big cities they dominate via zoning reform. That is starting to happen.

But when one considers Marin County, the LA mayor and many left-NIMBYs ... I suspect many liberal Dems don't really believe this (and least in their neighborhood).
