People are always "Aha! See? Authoritarian!" But the issue hasn't been whether or not this regime is authoritarian but rather that authoritarianism has clearly been very popular in America for some time now.

Seems like what this accomplishes is to manage to place within the bounds of propriety the casually (though still deeply) bigoted remainder of GOP voters, for whom the genocidal musings of the Hitler Youth is a bit much.

It's disconcerting to believe that these people simply do and say what they need to in order to ride the wave of a boiled-brain race war ideology that happens to be both popular and effective but I think this is more often the case. It's hard to hold the culture, Americanism, to account.

Right. It does indeed appear that he is willing to be what he must be in order to win over this particular nation at this particular time. The worst of leaders for the worst of people. We are loathe to acknowledge the descent of a population into moral disgrace but this is just fact.

Naturally these are the same voters who actually believed that Mexico was going to pay for the wall because Trump/Dealmaker/Genius. His approach to international trade and diplomacy is the same as how he approaches everything: he just uses whatever advantage and power he happens to have to bully.

Yeah but you're forgetting that American soybean farmers who can no longer sell their beans to China because China can just buy their beans somewhere else will be compensated with tariff money collected from other Americans. So you see, China loses.
