Hey y'all! I'm Elijah. I'm a game dev living in Berkeley. I post about politics, technology, game development, software engineering, photography and more.
I'm here as a Twitter refugee, Threads emigree. I'm always trying to engage kindly and in good faith. Here are some random photos I've taken.

Utopia, apocalypse, or 2.1% real GDP growth. Thems your options according to the Dallas Federal Reserve folks.

MAJOR NEWS: @GavinNewsom signed SB 79, my bill allowing more housing near public transit — rail, subway, rapid bus.

It’s a huge step for housing in California. It’ll create more homes, strengthen our transit systems & reduce traffic & carbon emissions.

Thank you, Governor!

It’s important to flood social media and news channels with news about how ICE lies, so that potential jurors see it.

As a sorta aside, the tide of solar and batteries coming online are *the* factor we need to understand to understand the near to medium future grid. Sources of demand that can turn off with time of day or season are going to be basically free, while spiky at-will supply will be super valuable.

Maybe a tiny bit, but line loss is small. If you can turn off data centers during rare power demand peaks you might actually need to build out *less* than the power demand of the data center (though I don't know if any data centers are actually doing this).

One of my oldest friends is making it work and working on a game developed in this way though!

Fields of Aaru is a cozy life sim crafting game set in Ancient Egypt. We've been developing it for almost 3 years. Farm along the Nile and meet the locals. Explore the sands beyond, discovering oases, tombs, and pyramids.

I mean draw and generation are both valid measures just measured at different locations.

Using it as a gross approximation of the size of a data center that also seems fine? It's like saying "Ford has 300,000 SQ ft of manufacturing in Nevada".

What is my dude talking about?Watts are a power measurement. This is definitional, there is a consensus on this.
edzitron.com
Something I'm coming to realise: everybody talks about megawatts and gigawatts of data centers but there is no real consensus on what that means. Is it power? Is it compute?

Also: nobody can/will/wants to talk about what these things cost to run

I think the "Johnathan Blow style of game development" by which I mean "small, high power team takes a long time to make a smallish tight game" is aesthetically beautiful as a dev approach. Too bad it's financially challenging & doesn't work for most of the games players want.

A close friend of mine has spent the past couple years working with his wife to build this beautiful & unique cozy game! Give them a follow if you like Egypt &/or cozy games!

We wanted to make the sand sparkle in our game. We've also added heat distortion.

Fields of Aaru is a cozy life sim set in the afterlife of Ancient Egypt. It features light survival mechanics like thirst when venturing into the desert.

That face when you can't tell if you stumbled in to a Russian bot farm pretending to be toxic dumb accelerationist leftists... or if they are real.

#ScreenshotSaturday Excited to share the very first post for our cozy life-sim.

It's set in Ancient Egypt, built using Bevy, and we've been working on it for almost 3 years!

Credit where credit is due, science fiction authors of the past 50 years did an excellent job predicting the vibe of 2025.

It would be much easier to take the right wing concern about political violence as good faith if they didn't all seem so excited about it. Political violence is tragic. It's not an exciting opportunity to beat your opponents for good.

Berkeley needs a 🚠 from downtown through campus & up into the hills. Berkeley could build dorms on the now accessable hillside & Downtown Berkeley Bart -> campus or the labs would be sooo much quicker.

America's leaderless revolutionary gorilla movement is stupider and more pointless than anyone could have possibly prepared for. It's literally children angry at their teachers & gamers radicalized by 4chan.

Reminder that the US could provide air support to Ukraine and allow them to win the war in a few months if we were willing to risk a few US casualties.

Are you implying with this should be prosecutable or do you think that it is bad that speech like this is sometimes prosecuted?

Yea, I have no problem with people playing poker with their friends, but at the very least you should not be able to advertise online gambling.

They should teach utilitarian moral philosophy as the correct way to understand morality in grade school.

You're right I know only the absolute basics about social choice theory... But every time I engage with somebody who believes this shit they have massive holes in their thinking & I am increasingly convinced that the whole field doesn't really try to understand liberal democracy.
elijahlrc.bsky.social
Dude you're so deep in typical mind fallacy. Other people have different preferences than you! Other people have different values than you! Other people take different axioms as the foundations of their world views! Liberal democracy must take this into account!
