Perhaps you won't agree, but nothing is crueler than a coward. And the slaughter to come is probably beyond our imagining.

I think the key element is in the name- “euro”
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
I think people have taken the obviously true "Hamas are cruel autocrats who have prioritized their own interest over the peoples" and interpreted it as "they don't care about Palestinian liberation and only care about their own power" if that were the case 10/7 wouldn't have happened!

it is obviously possible we are using different definitions of pan-national but based on the one I am using I think it is not unreasonable
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
but there was a real sense of a new state and a soviet people being formed. in the same way that I can consider america to be genuinely pan-national state despite using English as its sole official langauge and commiting horrible crimes originating in anglo/euro-centrism.

you dont think there is a sense that Stalin and later kruschev both saw themselves as engaged in a new non-russian national project and engaged politically accordingly? Im not trying to deny soviet crimes here (which were largely russian nationalist in character)
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
I agree! honestly I cannot imagine that different governing structure leading to a different leadership, if anything Stalin would have benefited from a unitary system.
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
what did I say that was incorrect? I don't think I said anything that conflicts with this.

I think the USSR was a pan-national project, it was to the extent that Stalin could not have gotten the top job otherwise, but it was not insofar as soon as he got the top job his priorities became Russification. obviously Stalin in particular was opposed to the pan-national status quo he inherited
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
I think it because the russian republican is the country which retains the fondest memory of the USSR (for obvious reasons) and they have tricked themselves into believing that some symbolic compliments to the revolutionary legacy is keeping the dream alive in any way that matters. very sad!
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
I tend to think the soviet union was in this specific way not the russian empire with a red coat of paint (though it was in other ways) but your right the people who think soviet=russian really are giving up the game on what they consider the USSR to have been.

James c Scott is a much better author on some of the same topics (at least for the dawn of everything) and with the same anarchist bent, but as an actually good scholarly work
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
Stalin was Georgian! if you want to compliment the soviet union (as many of these posters do) you should honor one of its more noble characteristics of being a genuinely pan-national political project, you can only demean it by considering it a purely Russian endeavor!

I recall an entire bit of discourse on this app about how many arch-segregationists opposed fascism!
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
I think this is a non-zero percentage of explanation for things like operation overlord, but it obviously doesn’t explain lend lease.
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
No, as with other things funded by tariffs it doesn’t seem like they need to
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
when they find that something is judicially unreviewable they are mostly avoiding giving a precedent that would allow lower courts to review it (for this exact reason) but they never indicate that something unreviewable by them as the Supreme Court, its just for the lower courts
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
right but they haven't directly stated that precedent, and if the president were to attack the court directly they could rule that to be unconstitutional
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
I do think Reagan would have been cool with trumps stances on russia and nato, he was a committed anti-communist not a believer in international freedom! but overall his politics really don't line up with trump's!
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
oh yeah I agree that these arent precedents in any real sense, I just think ignoring the court is probably the ideal outcome
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
you dont think theres a way to productively use the power to defund organizations that congress has mandated funding for? thats potentially the only check on ICE
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
people are working on it! its just way harder
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
What’s interesting about it? that’s the aipac logo!
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
yeah pretty clearly, I just think its crazy to say that someone isnt lying if they said something you consider false and left it up after being corrected
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
you have corrected them, they are no longer misinformed, arent they lying by keeping the original post up?
eljajlorbs.bsky.social
something sucking doesnt make it not true. trump is president, it sucks! I wish it weren't the case, but pretending it isn't true will get us nowhere!
