also the above about victims does NOT suggest that victims are not allowed *at all* to forgive their abusers. this is a question of autonomy. the phrase "we must forgive and forget" is only problematic to me in regards to the "we must" part, implying we do so in favor of something beyond the self

an alternative to this that i reject is the idea that victims are required to tolerate or outright forgive said abuse, which at no point are they required to do so even if the abusive individual swears they have changed and presents evidence to support themselves

many people are groomed from a young age to become pieces of shit, and the obsession with self-directed willpower training to fight "bad urges" feels horrifically religious, frequently only backed up by the threat of state violence and incarceration. "Be good or else" does not seem to work very well
