Every academic career is built on rejection, but we don’t show it.

CVs list publications, grants & awards, not rejected manuscripts, unfunded proposals, or failures.

But those invisible rejections shape us more than our successes ever do.

A friend in the UK said that they sometimes issue invitations as “6:30 for 7” which means you should arrive any time between 6:30 and 7. (But not necessarily that dinner starts promptly at 7). I like it!

So far the only real disagreement here (and among my fb friends) is whether it is ever acceptable to be *early* to a dinner party.

If you are invited to someone’s house for dinner (say, at 6:00), what’s the earliest you might arrive and the latest and still be considered polite?

(Bonus q: what’s the *optimally* polite time?)

I’m curious how this varies culturally/regionally/generationally.

This is closest to my own politeness window. Optimal time, maybe 6:07?

Traffic is a huge wild card. You have a choice to time your trip so you’ll be on time if all goes well, or to time your trip so you’ll be on time if the traffic is terrible. It’s basically impossible.

In my opinion kids add a 20 min grace buffer to whatever the politeness window is

This is pretty close to my politeness window as a US time pessimist! 😂

When only my power is out a week from now I’m going to regret this…

Bill Nighy has a new podcast where he answers advice questions, suggests a playlist (this week was classic R&B tunes on the theme of adultery), and reads you an excerpt from a favorite book. All delivered in Mr Nighy's velvety tones.

I mean, honestly.

Yes, still working, but getting more inconsistent—it had been pretty reliable for 7+ years of heavy usage so it felt smart at the time to replace it.

Update: replaced old coffee machine with a Barista Pro which worked great for 12 days then started producing espresso with cold water. Infuriating.

QUICK! Is there a reason *not* to replace our 7 yr old Breville Barista Express with another one??

TIME IS RUNNING OUT.

Happy Chili Crisp Day to all who celebrate. This year’s chilis were so potent I only used a few. SO exciting.

Oh, what a lovely poem. Thanks for recommending it. Baking is an escape, even when the cake falls apart as you take it out of the pan.

I've never tried the topping! What could be bad about brown sugar?
emilymyers.bsky.social
Tell Ann I bake it in a bundt pan and don't do the topping. (NBsee prior photo for results of bundt pan success)
