Soaring healthcare costs are at the heart of the US government shutdown.

With a key tax credit due to expire, Americans' premiums could jump $200-300/month.

"That's a car payment...2-3 trips to the grocery store," says Liz Pancotti from @groundwork.bsky.social.

Australia Institute polling found that 54% of Australians want a more independent foreign policy over a closer alliance with the United States.

‘I think it’s reflective of an erosion of trust in the United States under the Trump administration.’

“But why would adding another layer of oversight be any less political than existing arrangements? More importantly, why is politics regarded as a bad thing?”

The AUKUS deal is a sinking ship in all ways except for the one we want.

American experts are telling us "accept the fact that you're not going to get those submarines" but the Aus Gov is still giving America billions to make their own subs.

Ditch AUKUS while we can still salvage some dignity.

There's been a lot of discussion about whether Albanese will get a meeting with Trump at the upcoming UN General Assembly.

But would it even be a good idea?

International & Security Affairs Advisor Allan Behm thinks Albanese would do better to avoid it.

I interviewed historian @emmashortis.bsky.social on the particulars of American fascism, comparisons with Nazism, the global crisis of democracy, and Australia's options. None of this is particularly cheery stuff, but you might find some clarity in it.

"This is very clearly a successful use of the standard authoritarian playbook," said @emmashortis.bsky.social on ABC's PM.

"The key becomes how much the Trump administration doubles down on its threats and oppression, and it's given every indication it will continue to do that." #auspol

Kirk's death — a "horrific act of political violence" — is being weaponised to enact a plan of suppression against those considered enemies of Trump & his supporters, explained @emmashortis.bsky.social, via SBS.

The call for "widespread retribution" is "straight out of the authoritarian playbook".
