Now that COP is over, rich countries can go back to not pretending. Until next COP when both them and their pet journalists can celebrate their climate leadership

Another thing: if we've only managed to cut real emissions by 4% since 2005, how do you think we're getting the rest of the way to 62-70% by 2035 with the same weak policies?
The land-use accounting tricks that got us to -28% aren't yielding any more.
Just to cut through the backslapping: the very small emissions reduction (2%) is nowhere near enough even for our own local targets. These are also the easiest cuts (ie from local pwr generation bc we are buying solar panels) and are only in one sector.
Exported emissions are 4x bigger and growing.

Yikes
Have we reached peak dysfunction?! The NACC handed $1.1M to MA Services - the firm running a Nauru security operation linked with the Finks bikie gang. They're also guarding the ACIC who are literally tasked with taking down bikie gangs🤯

Add this to the CSIRO cuts and uni cuts generally and the picture is unmistakable
The success rate for NHMRC Ideas Grants announced yesterday was just over 8%. That means 11 of every 12 people who applied got rejected. This is a culture changing level of rejection and frankly a point of national shame. This is a crisis for research.
I will not rest until we see this resolved.

Tomorrow is Climate Report Christmas with the CCA's Annual Progress Review, the Annual Climate Statement, the Annual Emissions Projections, and the Quarterly Emissions data all coming out at once.

What's your tip for the weirdest accounting fudge the government will try to sneak through?

The dismantling of Science in #Australia continues...

I remember that hopes were high in 2022 that the new Labor Government would end the decade-long decline. We are now in the second #Albanese term, and things are worse than ever.

Paying Nauru billions to break international law for us
Last night @davidpocock.bsky.social and I read onto the Hansard an interview by the President of Nauru that the Albanese Government has been desperately trying to keep secret.

It shows Nauru plans to send refugees to places they fled. No wonder the secrecy.

Hopefully the Greens won’t cave this time. The Safeguard Mechanism was a disaster and this looks even worse.

The ABC has been told the federal government is willing to ensure native forestry complies with tougher new standards within three years if the Greens back the reforms.

This is utterly outrageous by the Group of Eight unis, and deeply insulting and undermining for environment and climate experts trying their hardest to achieve a more sustainable future for society. Shameful stuff.
1/ No surpirise that Business Council of Australia's leading the charge for further regressive changes to Watt's already regressive EPBC package

But 🤯 that the Group of 8 Unis (ANU, Monash, UAdelaide, UMelb, UNSW, USyd, UQ, UWA) have signed the 'Letter from the Alliance of 26 industry Groups' 🤬🤬🤬

I’ll be honest, I’m not finding this constant stream of “we have unfortunately misled you” by the NACC very reassuring

A previous disclosure that the head of the federal corruption watchdog had been consulted 11 times has been corrected to 21.
