This is a professional account where I skeet in my capacity as a University of Illinois professor and in my areas of subject matter expertise or interest. The university does not pay me enough to be its spokesperson.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

Christa Noel Robbins is a professor of art history at the University of Virginia. She shares her experience of facing a university investigation and prevailing after a targeted campaign. It arose from her choice to reschedule a class to support a student protest about a successful divestment effort.

Protestors believe that action has meaning. Protestors are exercising the rights enshrined in the Constitution. For me, protest is about love of country. I will be there on October 18th, and I hope you will be too.

No one who calls themselves an academic should ever fold to a "loyalty oath," no matter what vague risks to funding they might face. It goes against everything higher education and academic freedom stands for.

University Administrations: Reject Trump's "Loyalty Oath" Compacts

Growth of UIS admin occurs by subdividing admin units, then hiring new highly paid admins/assistants in those units. Or, adding new deputy/asst. admins to existing units. Practice has added MILLIONS in admin pay even as enrollment drops to 2009 levels. #AcademicSky

Where average faculty pay is in the $60K range, we're seeing administrative *raises* of $30K, $50K, $60K. Any time an admin takes on an interim role in addition to regular work, they're paid a stipend of tens of thousands of dollars. #AcademicSky

Some UIS administrative units have *doubled* in size over the last decade, while their pay has risen at multiples (2X, 3X) of the inflation rate. (Faculty pay has *declined* in relation to inflation.) Typically, the further an admin/admin unit is from students, the faster the growth. #AcademicSky

Public universities are a SERVICE and should no more be expected to generate "income" than any other public service (military, post office, parks, etc.) Taxpayers support public education because we understand an educated citizenry is necessary to a well-functioning democracy.

University of Illinois Springfield is proposing to eliminate degrees in Theater, Philosophy, and Women and Gender Studies at the same time the size and pay of university administrators has ballooned during declining enrollments. #AcademicSky
