Super fun and creative format. Price being the ceiling is a fun way to keep things interesting - you can also make some powerful plays/play powerful cards even with the low price point. There's a lot of overlap with Pauper, IMO.
I will have a few free hours on Friday to fight you. 😀
Guess who'll be on social media coverage for Magic Spotlight Series: Spider-Man?

It'll be my first time at this, but I'm really looking forward to it. I've always wanted to have a stab at Magic event coverage πŸ₯³
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. It feels good to be involved with the Pauper Format Panel, which is the actual north star for community and format curation. I'm glad smaller and up-and-coming formats are looking at what we've done as inspiration and applying it themselves.
I just think it's neat we have so many different ways to approach, express, and play Magic: The Gathering these days.

These community-built formats and community-ran events are some of the most genuine forms of the game in my opinion, and CubeCon is an incredible example of it.
Diving into things like Canadian Highlander is not only my favorite way to play Magic currently, but learning more about these community-driven formats allows me to gather these experiences and maybe apply it to Pauper internally with the Format Panel.
If there's one thing us community-driven Panel members should be doing more - it's talking to each other. I'd love to get in the weeds with the Commander Format Panel and the Canadian Highlander Committee some time, and compare notes on how we foster our respected communities.
I spent much of my CubeCon weekend hanging with the Value Vintage folks as since I'm on the Pauper Format Panel, I feel it's key to have a pulse on these newer formats and how they nurture their communities. Not only because we should be supporting each other, but there's always something to learn.
The sheer amount of community building that happens at events like CubeCon, Paupergeddon, and even Shoebox (March 2026) is simply remarkable - and is actually the thing that will outlive Magic more than anything else. Without it, we'd lose the most important characteristic and that is The Gathering.
Unsure if I'll be in the US much next year, we'll see.
And it's really easy to lose sight of what Magic is and the communities that can flourish within it due to the way we perceive and engage with the game online. There's a dividing contrast between the two - and I know which one I'd rather settle myself in.
The best aspect of CubeCon is how vibes-based it is, and how it was created to celebrate and share the wonder that is Cube with others.

There's no discourse, no narratives trickling down from online circles - just the coming together to play one of Magic's most unique and most expressive formats.
At my Gate waiting to board my flight back to England after a busy but super fun few weeks in the US, with last weekend being CubeCon 2025.

I know we often say that "Cube will outlive Magic", but I don't think that's completely true - I feel "Magic will outlive Magic". 🧡

It’s fascinating how the British were organised enough to lead the industrial revolution and conquer the globe when they can’t even agree what side of the footpath you’re meant to walk on.
Calling the Brackets a "communication tool" is so smart.
Lastly, it's wild that you have long-time and successful players like Javier Dominguez who won't have the chance to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. A two-time Magic World Champion, no less.
I genuinely hope the Hall of Fame returns some day. Presitege and recognition is something competitive players will always strive for in Magic. Not to mention, the Hall of Fame was a unique way to market competitive play and celebrate the players who saw the most success.
