Scholar of the early modern now in south Texas. My book, English National Identity and the Image of the Dutch: From the Armada to the Glorious Revolution, came out with Palgrave early in 2024. Posts represent my personal opinion, not my employer’s.

I love this painting so much. I saw it (at the Ufizzi?) three decades ago, purchased a print, carried it around Europe, had it framed when I started my first academic job, and have had it on my walls ever since. Stunning is right!

By Fra Filippo Lippi, Madonna and Child with Two Angels, 1465. Everything about this picture is stunning but I really love the angel smiling at us!

Dawn breaks over foothills of Alps. A strange wind blows, & in distance at right, crosses of Golgotha are empty. Gorgeous work by Wolf Huber.

O for a Muse of Fire that would ascend The brightest heaven of invention! A kingdom for a stage, princes to act, And monarchs to behold that Congress has not authorized the use of military force!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Congress has not authorized the use of military force.

Attention I ask from all the sacred people, greater and lesser offspring of Heimdall! Congress has not authorized the use of military force.

Didn’t realize he was born so early in the century. I used to have a student who impersonated Lee at Renaissance Festivals. He was quite good at it!

Today is the feast day of St Jerome. I used to have a copy of this Durer print above my desk. I love the quiet stillness of his study and the light streaming in through the windows.

Since I teach Shakespeare inter alia I’m sure that’s where I probably first encountered it (in Lear maybe). I’m just making a joke that it doesn’t look like a real word.

I feel as if I learned to pronounce it (that second way) because it rhymes with something in an early modern poem. Can’t remember exactly where though. Or maybe it was a meter/scansion thing with tertian-ague? It does t look like a real word though.

Wow! That really is amazing!

That song was so absurd. I had an even more nutso one I’d sing along in the car. Whoo! Memories!

I have become a convert to this film. Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

And also: unpacking some boxes that I hadn’t checked last year, I found some files for projects that I thought I’d lost. So this was a great week!

In my other class, students are digging Aphra Behn. So that’s gratifying too!
