Arguing since birth. Urban planning, politics, weather, Drag Race, and photography are all fair game. Opinions are strictly my own—unless others agree. I assume that strings of emojis in people's bios are their washing instructions

You know how we look back at things like the Great Leap Forward and the famines of the USSR and wonder, how could they let that happen?

Our country is letting that happen right now. If another pandemic comes along, millions may die needlessly. And the media will act like it was some inevitability

BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

Notice how there were no ellipses or image after that.

If it's a Trump flunky who made the mistake, they'll probably get a promotion for sticking it to that whole antifa justice system we got

Sometimes I just take a moment to be grateful for living in a time and place where this is what I get when I take a picture of the sky on most days

Cerulean is too often something we take for granted

Yup. And the fact that questions like "Should illegal aliens get health care?" and "Should we let non-citizens die if they get suck in the US?" will both get a majority "NO" responses shows that many people don't even think deeply enough about policy for polling to be truly meaningful in many cases

Easily one of the most underrated YouTube series of all time.

I still relish inDEHpendahnce.

Democrats spend millions measuring public sentiment; Republicans spend millions shaping it.

It feels like every day there's some dumb centrist or "never-Trump" Republican who slithers online or into a newspaper column to say "Well, actually, it's not technically fascism..."

And the Trump regime is like "God damn it! What did we miss?! WHAT WILL IT TAKE??"

Most mainstream media are allowing the obvious, shameless lies of the Trump regime to go virtually unchallenged

Journalism is utterly broken. Maybe it was never not broken (remember Satanic Panic?) and most people just let it go because leaders still had some sense of shame about telling lies

I didn't say they *wouldn't* see productivity gains. I'm just skeptical that they will be 5% compounding annually for multiple years. If you just meant that AI will create a 5% productivity gain and that it's it, then that seems like an easier case to make, but it's also not terribly revolutionary.
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Widespread adoption of mobile robotics paired with AI is the real revolution

I'll join the hype train when robots are poised to start harvesting peaches and cleaning toilets in everyday settings
ericpanzer.bsky.social
I mean sure, if it does that it will be extremely impactful, but that requires a lot of assumptions about its ability to scale, take on new tasks, operate independently, and consistently deliver that level of productivity increase.

some jobs are years away from AI delivering such productivity

AI companies: AI will revolutionize every aspect of your life tomorrow!

Extremely online leftists: AI is evil and must be destroyed.

Normies: Sometimes I use AI to help word stuff and make clip art for my PowerPoints and digital invitations.

Can we PLEASE get a Portlandia sketch where Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein reprise, like, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 recurring character from the show, but they're all gearing up for "war" in ridiculous ways, and then they run around being crazy in otherwise calm streets where people are just doing Portland things?

The correct response is "I think Americans would agree that no matter how you got here, getting sick in America should not be a death sentence."

Maybe add "Jesus healed the sick and Republicans are showing that they reject his teachings when they say strangers in our land deserve to die", for flair

Really hard-hitting reporting here, you're doing us all a true journalistic service

"I don't know who this Habeas Corpus is, but it sounds like someone who has pronouns."
ericpanzer.bsky.social
The fact that this question isn't being asked by every member of the media—especially after how much time/energy was spent on Biden's fitness—shows that US journalism is fundamentally broken

I find it darkly funny how Trump, based on nothing, is insisting that Portland is a war zone that's boarded up and/or burning the ground; the media are failing to uniformly call him out as a liar and/or mentally unfit; and yet, somehow, AI generated videos are the thing dealing a death blow to truth

The Iraq War. Anti-vax beliefs. Homeopathy. Witch hunts. Satanic Panic. Multi-level marketing. Phrenology. Beanie Babies.

None of these required AI or even fake video/photos. People will believe false and harmful things with little to no evidence of any sort.

Critical thinking is irreplaceable.

You already can't trust video. AI/digital manipulation are hardly the only ways to lie with images/video. Fox News has been abusing video content for decades, without the benefit of AI.

There is no replacement for media literacy, skepticism, and trusted/trustworthy institutions to adjudicate truth.
