Arguing since birth. Urban planning, politics, weather, Drag Race, and photography are all fair game. Opinions are strictly my own—unless others agree. I assume that strings of emojis in people's bios are their washing instructions
I feel like I'm losing track of what we're even arguing about anymore

While places like NYC, SF, and LA may have the very worst housing affordability problems, pretty much all large cities with strong job markets have housing affordability problems relative to both rural areas and the past

It's a deeply unpopular opinion here, but I am a lot more worried about how our media ecosystem has for decades elevated and rewarded people who are routinely this wrong than I am worried about the impacts of AI

The media are eager for a misinformation scapegoat to distract from their elite capture

I can't fucking believe I have to say this, but...

No war with Venezuela!

Are we really this fucking stupid as a country? Are we actually going to let a liar drag us into another pointless overseas war less than 5 years after the last one truly ended?

The Iraq War

4,431 American service members killed and 31,994 wounded
66,081–210,296 estimated civilian deaths
460,000–654,965 excess deaths

$1.1 trillion in direct costs to US taxpayers
That's ~$3,500 for every single person in the US as of 2010

Warmongering plutocrats are monsters
Rep. Salazar: "We're gonna be doing a favor to us, to our children, to our economy, to our oil companies to be able to liberate. And to Venezuelans who wants to be free."

That most people aren't perpetually furious and protesting over the fact that our public universities have literally been told that they can't use certain words or they will lose funding shows just how much we are frogs sitting in a boiling pot

Also, you will never be able to be fully confident whether you made this decision for yourself or whether it was me, an apostate Jew who still has the password for spaced-based mind control laser, Maimonides Shalosh, who made it for you

The fact that we have centrists and hack pundits arguing that democrats should campaign on throwing trans people under the bus instead of running on the fact that the President of the United States threatened to execute people who disagree with him shows a lack of not just strategy but moral fiber

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

I struggle with whether or not to block this hack

On the one hand, I'm sometimes morbidly curious to know what idiocy he's spouting. On the other hand, I regret it pretty much every time I read something he writes, because these days it's often powerfully stupid and disingenuous

The fact that the stock market keeps going up despite the constant avalanche of nonsense like this and ongoing attacks on science/research is what makes me think the American economy is like Wile E. Coyote and we've already gone over the cliff, but Wall Street types are assiduously not looking down.

If Musk truly becomes a trillionaire, that would mean he could give $100 to every single person on earth and still be a billionaire

This is stolen value. Nothing Musk has done has provided $1 trillion worth of benefit to humanity. It's theft. It's obscene. And if there is a hell, he should go there

Now that we've seen that saturating a country with guns doesn't actually prevent tyranny and that countries with extremely tight gun laws can stop an attempted authoritarian coup (I see you, South Korea), I'm hoping we might someday actually make an effort to take all the guns away
“They came into the building understanding it was a daycare. They did not have a warrant. It is a violation of our rights. It is a violation of these children’s rights. They are terrorizing our community.”

Trump’s ICE goons raided a damn daycare.

Y'all, @chrishy.bsky.social and I just heard two Japanese people on the streets of Tokyo mostly speaking Japanese but clearly talking about Mamdani winning the New York mayoral

This was confirmed when I said "New York? Mamdani?"and they cheered with us

I think this Mamdani guy's got the juice!

Just sitting here in an immaculate cafe in Seoul, where the all night buses come every 15–30 min and even public bathrooms often have bidets and thinking about how it costs $1 million to build a glorified porta potty in the US and LAPD is out tonight tear gassing and trying to horse trample people

Traveling in Asia, something that comes through strongly is that cities there remain driven by what they can be, while American cities are fixated on what they were and are

There is no path to a better information environment that does not go completely around current corporate-owned media

Individual reporters may be consummate professionals with great intentions, but they work for organizations geared to serve the personal and class interests of those who own them
Yesterday's No Kings protests were apparently the largest since the first Earth Day in 1970

The NYT covered that story with a six column headline across the top of the paper and two full pages inside

Today, two small pics below the fold and a story on page A23

They constantly let America down

Just a reminder that corporate media spent weeks on Hillary Clinton suggesting that some of Trump's supporters might be deplorable
Trump's Truth Social account just posted this AI video of him flying a fighter jet that reads "King Trump."

AI Trump is wearing a crown while he dumps shit on protesters. He's such a pathetic little man.

I feel like for years the GOP has been the aliens from Mars Attacks, pretending they're interested in cooperation. Dems are the scientists and electeds credulously going along, and saying "well maybe they attacked us because our dove offended them?"

The right only wants power, and we must deny them

Just once I'd like to see one of these prominent pundits telling the people who don't vote, don't knock on doors, don't protest, don't call their reps that *they* are the ones doing it wrong, instead of tsk-tsking those who us who ARE active, and in some cases have spent 100s of hours campaigning

At the risk of opening a YIMBY fault line, I think this plan is a bullshit techno-libertarian pipe dream with a thin urbanist veneer. It's dense sprawl, with NO current plans for public transit/rail connections, leaving residents at the mercy of private shuttles (at best) and taxpayers on the hook
Spent some time with the California Forever plans today and it's exciting. If they pull this off, I would absolutely consider moving. First off - they're really locking themselves into 30 du/acre, which is like triple San Francisco's (13 du/acre). That would be sick as hell.
