Arguing since birth. Urban planning, politics, weather, Drag Race, and photography are all fair game. Opinions are strictly my own—unless others agree. I assume that strings of emojis in people's bios are their washing instructions

I didn't say they *wouldn't* see productivity gains. I'm just skeptical that they will be 5% compounding annually for multiple years. If you just meant that AI will create a 5% productivity gain and that it's it, then that seems like an easier case to make, but it's also not terribly revolutionary.

Widespread adoption of mobile robotics paired with AI is the real revolution

I'll join the hype train when robots are poised to start harvesting peaches and cleaning toilets in everyday settings
ericpanzer.bsky.social
I mean sure, if it does that it will be extremely impactful, but that requires a lot of assumptions about its ability to scale, take on new tasks, operate independently, and consistently deliver that level of productivity increase.

some jobs are years away from AI delivering such productivity

AI companies: AI will revolutionize every aspect of your life tomorrow!

Extremely online leftists: AI is evil and must be destroyed.

Normies: Sometimes I use AI to help word stuff and make clip art for my PowerPoints and digital invitations.

Can we PLEASE get a Portlandia sketch where Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein reprise, like, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 recurring character from the show, but they're all gearing up for "war" in ridiculous ways, and then they run around being crazy in otherwise calm streets where people are just doing Portland things?

The correct response is "I think Americans would agree that no matter how you got here, getting sick in America should not be a death sentence."

Maybe add "Jesus healed the sick and Republicans are showing that they reject his teachings when they say strangers in our land deserve to die", for flair

What the right-wing is seizing on seems really important to the people of San Francisco

Really hard-hitting reporting here, you're doing us all a true journalistic service

"I don't know who this Habeas Corpus is, but it sounds like someone who has pronouns."
ericpanzer.bsky.social
The fact that this question isn't being asked by every member of the media—especially after how much time/energy was spent on Biden's fitness—shows that US journalism is fundamentally broken
ericpanzer.bsky.social
I find it darkly funny how Trump, based on nothing, is insisting that Portland is a war zone that's boarded up and/or burning the ground; the media are failing to uniformly call him out as a liar and/or mentally unfit; and yet, somehow, AI generated videos are the thing dealing a death blow to truth
ericpanzer.bsky.social
The Iraq War. Anti-vax beliefs. Homeopathy. Witch hunts. Satanic Panic. Multi-level marketing. Phrenology. Beanie Babies.

None of these required AI or even fake video/photos. People will believe false and harmful things with little to no evidence of any sort.

Critical thinking is irreplaceable.
ericpanzer.bsky.social
You already can't trust video. AI/digital manipulation are hardly the only ways to lie with images/video. Fox News has been abusing video content for decades, without the benefit of AI.

There is no replacement for media literacy, skepticism, and trusted/trustworthy institutions to adjudicate truth.

One of my most old-man-yells-at-cloud opinions is that, when I was very young, dogs were creatures that often lived almost their entire lives outside, except in dangerous weather. Therefore, your dog can probably survive without you being around it all the time and you should learn to do the same.

I'm not saying that most anti-AI posts are fake. But early in the conversation, and even now, a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding was/is flying around. It's totally possible that such misinfo is purely organic, but it's also possible it was promoted in order to sow discord, slow US science
ericpanzer.bsky.social
These are not remotely substantive questions. This reporter's approach represents the worst of horserace gotcha journalism. Whatever I may disagree with Porter on, she was right not to take this BS.
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Fair point. Though, sort of by definition, the ones on here are the ones using it for online communication and organizing. Perhaps I should have said "the online left"

Sometimes I honestly wonder if this moral manic is being seeded by Chinese psy-op because it puts the US at a disadvantage
ericpanzer.bsky.social
I'm not really looking forward to the own-goal of the left excluding itself from the best communications and organizing tools we have because we are losing our collective mind over AI moral panic

All the anxiety being displaced from vanilla oligarchy to AI as a tech is a big PR coup for oligarchs

I would argue this is mainly the dark side of illegal cannabis, since there would be much less reason to use such sites if it were fully legal (it's still federally prohibited)

People don't sneak off to the woods to grow strawberries or wheat
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Hear me out: What if California showed-up the federal government by giving temporary emergency pay to certain critical federal workers?

Like imagine if California (and other blue states) kept airports fully functioning while red state airports broke down?

The optics alone might be worth it
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Or how about the New York Times ignoring mountains of medical evidence that gender-affirming care can improve people's mental health and help save lives and instead fixating on the minority of people who regret receiving it?

Also not a consequence of fake images or videos
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Or remember just last year when pretty much every bit of empirical and quantitative evidence we had showed that the economy was actually doing pretty good, but no one believed it because the corporate media kept asking why Joe Biden was raising the price of eggs?

Yeah, AI didn't do that either
ericpanzer.bsky.social
This is a quaint idea, but it doesn't work because all it takes is someone snapping a Polaroid or taking film of AI generated media

Ultimately tech can only go so far to arbitrate truth. There is no replacement for trusted/trustworthy institutions

(The Iraq war did not require generative AI)
quantian.bsky.social
People need to start investing in, like, Polaroids and Technicolor film if you ever want to use photographic or video evidence in a courtroom after 2026
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Right, but assuming these alternative numbers aren't just fabricated, it would indicate that people change their minds when the question is reframed, which just goes to show that a lot of people don't really understand the issue or they would be resistant to such reframing
ericpanzer.bsky.social
Even though it's a push poll, assuming the results at least accurately represent the responses, this shows just how woefully uninformed Americans are. The fact that people are able to be tricked by stuff like this is just so damning.
