I didn't say they *wouldn't* see productivity gains. I'm just skeptical that they will be 5% compounding annually for multiple years. If you just meant that AI will create a 5% productivity gain and that it's it, then that seems like an easier case to make, but it's also not terribly revolutionary.

I mean sure, if it does that it will be extremely impactful, but that requires a lot of assumptions about its ability to scale, take on new tasks, operate independently, and consistently deliver that level of productivity increase.

some jobs are years away from AI delivering such productivity

Can we PLEASE get a Portlandia sketch where Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein reprise, like, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 recurring character from the show, but they're all gearing up for "war" in ridiculous ways, and then they run around being crazy in otherwise calm streets where people are just doing Portland things?

The correct response is "I think Americans would agree that no matter how you got here, getting sick in America should not be a death sentence."

Maybe add "Jesus healed the sick and Republicans are showing that they reject his teachings when they say strangers in our land deserve to die", for flair

I find it darkly funny how Trump, based on nothing, is insisting that Portland is a war zone that's boarded up and/or burning the ground; the media are failing to uniformly call him out as a liar and/or mentally unfit; and yet, somehow, AI generated videos are the thing dealing a death blow to truth

None of these required AI or even fake video/photos. People will believe false and harmful things with little to no evidence of any sort.

Critical thinking is irreplaceable.

You already can't trust video. AI/digital manipulation are hardly the only ways to lie with images/video. Fox News has been abusing video content for decades, without the benefit of AI.

There is no replacement for media literacy, skepticism, and trusted/trustworthy institutions to adjudicate truth.

One of my most old-man-yells-at-cloud opinions is that, when I was very young, dogs were creatures that often lived almost their entire lives outside, except in dangerous weather. Therefore, your dog can probably survive without you being around it all the time and you should learn to do the same.

I'm not saying that most anti-AI posts are fake. But early in the conversation, and even now, a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding was/is flying around. It's totally possible that such misinfo is purely organic, but it's also possible it was promoted in order to sow discord, slow US science

Fair point. Though, sort of by definition, the ones on here are the ones using it for online communication and organizing. Perhaps I should have said "the online left"

Sometimes I honestly wonder if this moral manic is being seeded by Chinese psy-op because it puts the US at a disadvantage

I would argue this is mainly the dark side of illegal cannabis, since there would be much less reason to use such sites if it were fully legal (it's still federally prohibited)

People don't sneak off to the woods to grow strawberries or wheat
