I feel like all I ever do on social media nowadays is retweet Paul Krugman.

(As someone who grew up in Arkansas but has lived in Europe (DE, FR, UK) for most of her adult life, it seems farcical to suggest that the average Arkansan is better off than the average UK/EU citizen. I mean, c'mon.)

My own employer is not a top uni in the UK (at least not in economics), but gosh, there sure are a lot of very talented and smart kids in our economics programme!

FWIW, I don't think the status quo is so bad—there are a lot of great universities outside of the "very top". (Hey—Marc even went to one!) Tech Titans like Marc and other powerbrokers in DC, NY, SF etc. should quit obsessing about "top" institutions and look for talent/ideas/etc. elsewhere.
