I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.

Yeah, this is important. Sometimes (waves around vaguely) behaving like a hateful jerk is at an emotional level both understandable and maybe even apt. But if you try to rationalise it beyond that and try to use it to justify it as a general state of being then you just are a hateful jerk, soz

I think this is probably my main retrospective on peak woke years to be honest. Lots of poor behaviour rationalised as political pragmatism with no care for whether it ever actually worked. Lots of lofty ideals, but lots of easy rationalisations too.

I vastly prefer when people say ‘we’ve got these feelings and they just need to be expressed, if imperfectly’ to ‘here’s why acting out the way I want to is somehow pragmatic’ as inevitably there is never any retrospective evaluation of whether it was true or not.

I basically never like "here's the rationale for why it's ok for me to be a hateful jerk" - at most tact sometimes forebears me from actually commenting on the fact that someone is being a hateful jerk. But it never really seems true to me that there's some political imperative which makes it ok.

i actually don't really think it makes sense to hate all of the citizens of a country because of the geopolitical policies of their country, which they almost certainly have no say in. you're supposed to hate them on the basis of crude cultural stereotypes

I think The Simpsons may be a counterexample to the theory that it always strengthens a brand to have new content coming out.

The Hank Scorpio episode of the Simpsons was a lot of fun and it's a shame the show (which is still going) does not produce comedy of that calibre any more.

One of the funny* things about the Jenrick defection is his articles basically amount to "Reheated Thatcherism and bungs to pensioners have broken Britain, and that's why I'm joining the Reheated Thatcherism and Bungs to Pensioners Party".
Don't know if this sort of rhetoric has caught up with the fact that Reform's base are the most dependent on welfare of any party's

The thing is, the right wing has been stark bollock naked since the French revolution and yet we've spent the intervening centuries acting like they have a disagreement about tax rates instead of profound neurological damage and we don't know what politics that recognises this would look like.
A lot of British "patriots" siding with a hostile foreign leader who has declared economic war on their country.

A hostile foreign leader who is now looking for anything he can do to damage Britain - because he wants to steal Greenland.

You have all been totally exposed.

They also get this way about hot women who disagree with them! Witness their reaction to AOC. In general the Internet Right's whole Thing with hot people who disagree with them is pretty fascinating, it seems to play a peculiar role in their political psychology.
