Hey @news.rte.ie what the fuck is up with this sentence?

"Judge Clarke said she did not find the complainant "was as alarmed or distressed" as THEY had portrayed themself to be after Linehan made a string of tweets about THEM." And then proceed to quote a glinner sentence which misgenders her?
Graham Linehan cleared of harassing transgender activist
Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan has been cleared at Westminster Magistrates' Court of harassing transgender activist Sophia Brooks, but was found guilty of criminal damage to their mobile phone.

Truly grotesque that the BBC chose to describe the *victim* of Graham Linehan's *crime* for which he was *convicted* in these terms. I can only conclude that this is now standard BBC editorial practice for referring to trans people, regardless of context. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

It's a standard that has been adopted by large sections of the press as more and more derogatory language is used on a regular basis.

Even those who 'play nice' tend to just not use any pronouns at all for trans people.

The politicians and “journalists” coming to Glinner’s defence against transphobia paved the way for Farage’s defence claim that his racism is “never hurtful”

It feels worth mentioning that Graham Linehan’s harassment literally continued in the courtroom, as he repeatedly misgendered Sophia, and referred to her as “Tarquin”, a fictional deadname he made up for her as part of his harassment campaign. The judge was complicit in this harassment happening.
I wonder if I spent all day, every day, for years, calling Graham Linehan - or the judge - a nonce and then, when I saw him in the street screamed it in his face and smashed his phone, would a judge find I had done no harassing?

And that's not even factoring in the age of his victim

He turned up to court wearing this. I'm imagining he was also wearing this on the plane. Just a total embarrassment.

It's much simpler than that. The Boy Scouts aren't maximally cruel to trans kids and so Republicans believe it should be destroyed.

Today I learned that stalking a 17 year old girl, writing up a 400 page 'dossier' about her, falsely reporting her to the police and smashing her phone does not constitute 'harassment'.

One wonders what *would*.

I do actually consider myself a trans activist, but I didn't choose to become one.

It was forced upon me and I still fight against it every day because I don't want to be a trans activist.

I just want to live my life unbothered.

"Anti-trans activist Graham Linehan guilty of criminal damage" - This is how this story should be framed by any neutral outlet.

How much of these cases is it the judge being awful and how much is the trans person's lawyer being useless at explaining what is happening in ways the judge can understand?

More of my life and work is built around being an Arsenal fan than it is being trans, by some distance, and yet...
I do not appreciate that the goodness of Arsenal's football seems directly tied to the shitness of the rest of the world.

yes I don't really see how you can go "oh yikes these people have changed their political views incredibly quickly, mostly because of what Very Online people talk about on social media" and also think that people who went from never talking about gender to calling trans women predators are....normal
I don’t like subtweeting people I consider online friends, but there is a subset of people who are very worried about the ongoing radicalisation of our political elite but won’t ever acknowledge the echoes with the radicalisation of their colleagues on trans rights
And few who are sympathetic to us, some who are friendly with me on here, will ever stick their head above the parapet

It is genuinely insane to see a judge describe Graham Linehan as a “generally credible witness” in a trial where he claimed Sophia Brooks has been engaged in “trans activism” since 2013 (when she would’ve been 6 years old), then, when challenged, claimed her drivers license lied about her age.

Seen some people misunderstanding the point of TSN pointing out our previous communications with the government about this. It's not because we expect them to have empathy for trans people or to listen out of the goodness of their hearts. It's to prove that they know exactly what they're doing.

The reality is that what is being conveyed to the public is that you can say the sort of stuff Graham Linehan says, with the same malice and frequency, even to minors, and it's perfectly okay - because the "reason" is essentially an acceptable prejudice.
