you ever think about that guy in hunter x hunter who used nen for making websites. cuz i do. i imagine the kind of hassle it must be to try to reconfigure your nen because flash got deprecated and HTML standards changed again. fucking around with nen infused javascript and getting mad at themselves

Red Rooms is a tense, evocative, subtle, and complex film that pairs well w movies like Anatomy of a Fall. Billed as horror due to events that happen offscreen, but more of a hybrid. Disturbing, dislocating, with stunning choreography and acting. (Def understand aversion to watching it, tjo.)

Rusty & Ziyi's reunion (comm request for Echo)

Watched the 1963 sci-fi tokusatsu horror movie Matango by Ishiro Honda of Godzilla fame, and it really didn't disappoint. Just a fascinating and densely atmospheric movie

A letterboxd review that reads:

Dare I say, a more interesting and nuanced exploration of the nuclear terror allegory that Ishiro Honda explored previously in Godzilla? While Godzilla was a pretty one-dimensional metaphor for nuclear power's immense destructive capabilities while still acknowledging the potential usage for good, Matango more closely examines the impact that nuclear hellfire reigned on the individual level with its allegory. Women are subjugated and immediately commodified for their bodies, scarce resources are hoarded and bargained for currency which may not even have much of a use anymore, and people immediately turn to nihilism and the destructive overindulgence of vice during dire times.

It's not hard to draw a line between the mushroom men's designs and the shape of a mushroom cloud, the literal personification of armageddon. The sole survivor, Murai looks out at a neon-lit skyline of a rapidly modernizing Tokyo cityscape post-American occupation, and wonders if he should have stayed on the island; if the radical change of the increasingly westernized country is worth the subsumption of the way of life he was familiar with. Mold is a fungal growth that is spurred on by moisture, but a mold is also a shape you will be plied into in order to conform. Deeply atmospheric movie with absolutely gorgeous set design and monster effects. A lot more depth than I was expecting from the "mushroom monster men" movie I thought I was going into!
