Apple season in New England! My favorite is the Macoun, bred by New York researchers in the 1920s from MacIntosh and Jersey Black stock. Great in pies and greater eaten fresh, crispy and tart (but not too tart).
They don't keep super well, so there's many a pie in our near future.

Just finished this amazing book, True Biz, by @novicsara.bsky.social and it brings home how vicious the new Trump cuts to disability education are. Calling my senator now.
Cover of the book, True Biz, by Sara Novic, showing the ASL sign for 'true biz' meaning 'for real.'

Hi Jared! You liked one of my #PitchDis pitches, but it's for a story you rejected in February. I've revised it since then, but Query Manager won't let me resubmit. Let me know if you'd still like the query and pages, and if so, how I can get them to you. In any case, thanks for liking my pitch!

Posted by Mary Doria Russell, one of my favorite authors, over on FB. I'm not as exhausted as she is, but she's been battling harder than I have. I guess it's up to the rest of us to step it up while she rests and recuperates.
I am not quite exhausted by it all, but the edge of exhaustion is now within spitting distance. My own personal little life is as near to perfect as anyone can sanely hope for, but the state of my country feels so dire that I can't relax into simple enjoyment. This whole catastrophe is self-inflicted. We could have had a joyful, competent, decent, and compassionate government, but we chose a hateful, idiotic, corrupt, and vengeful one.

The disource about Charlie Kirk is so awful that I had to disengage. It was right-wing white boi on right-wing white boi violence, but all the right-wing white boys are blaming leftists for political violence. It's illogical and factually wrong, but you can't get through to them, as you experienced.

It's very tempting to go Full Ostrick. Work in the garden, bake bread, take naps, paint. No news, no social media. Find sand, jam head into it.

I'm trying that strategy, at least temporarily. It feels like a relief, but also like cawardice. It's what MAGA world wants. So. I'm taking some time off. BUT I'LL BE BACK...

Maine? Can we get on this and change that yellow to green?

I wish this were a family recipe because if it were, it'd be my childhood comfort food. I just know it.
Pictjure of a Recipe for a cheese sandwich casserole using eggs, milk, 5 or 6 sharp cheddar cheese sandwiches, and 'a bit of Worcestershire sauce,' letting it stand for at least an hour before baking at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Can't beat this for cheesiness. Check out the whole thread if you're a word nerd. Really.

A Lithuanian equivalent to “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” is nemokamas sūris tik pelėkautuose. It means “the only free cheese is in a mousetrap”

* read on for more international cheese phrases (this thread may not turn out grate, but hopefully it will be gouda ‘nuff)…

Amazon worked for years to artificially depress the prices of self-published ebooks as a loss leader to sell Kindles. Now that the Kindle market is fairly saturated, they're using their near-monopoly market power to force ebook prices up and lower writer royalties.
