In olden days people saw Heron as some of the saddest, wretched, depressed creatures. Perhaps they just saw themselves reflected?

ALTHOUGH the Heron is of a long, lank, auk- ward ſhape, yet its plumage gives it on the whole an agreeable appearance; but when ſtripped of its

The Heron is defcribed by Buffon as exhibiting the picture of wretchedneſs, anxiety, and indigence, condemned to ſtruggle perpetually with mifery and want, and fickened by the reſtleſs cravings of a famiſhed appetite, &c. However faithful this in- genious naturaliſt may have been in pourtraying the appearance of the Heron, yet others are not in- clined to adopt his fentiments in defcribing its habits and manners, or to agree with him in opinion that it is one of the moſt wretched of animated beings.

It is probable that it fuffers no more than other birds, many fpecies of which employ equal atten- tion in looking for their prey, and it is not un- likely that the Heron derives pleaſure from it in- ſtead of pain. This bird, however, is of a melan- choly deportment, a filent and patient creature; and will, in the moſt ſevere weather, ſtand motionleſs a long time in the water, fixed to a ſpot, in appear- ance like the ſtump or root of a tree, waiting for its prey, which conſiſts of frogs, water-newts, eels, and other kinds of fish; and it is alſo ſaid that it will devour field-mice.

Incredible feeding frenzy at Lake Apopka in Florida. The water level in this canal dropped, trapping fish. Hundreds of alligators came to feast. Herons and egrets lined the banks, unable to get to the fish without risking a gator encounter.

Heroneers who used to follow Every over on the other place may remember Old Crook Neck of Lake Apopka wildlife drive, who seems to have been around forever! What a Heron!

We've heard him called the mascot of the Drive, or the "Mayor". He's peak GBH. 💙

This is a very well-known local Great Blue Heron, called "Crooked Neck." Biologists have said that the kink in his neck is likely from a birth defect caused by having an extra vertebrae. He's been seen at Lake Apopka in Florida for years and continues to thrive. I'm always happy to spot him!

Reddish Egret at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. He's canopy feeding - using his wings to block the sun's glare so he can see fish through the water.
