We are the quiet unnoticed Heron, inspiring Heroneers all over Planet Earth, as you encounter Heronkind for 1st or 1000th time.

In olden days people saw Heron as some of the saddest, wretched, depressed creatures. Perhaps they just saw themselves reflected?

Today people who stop to watch describe us as meditating, thoughtful, wise, and seeing the world better than most. Again, reflections. 💙 (1804)

I was relaxing while sitting in the car by the river while posting my pictures of the Eagle in the tree. I look up and 4 Bald Eagles and a Great Blue Heron were floating on the ice. #EastCoastKin

💭 I take stick
We went to a heron rookery near Rockport at dawn yesterday and were entertained by hundreds of herons building their nests. Here, a male brings a twig for the female to inspect and then place properly on the nest. 😍😍😍 #Herons #rookery #Texas

☕ Coffee for the Human.
🥃 Whiskey for the Heron.

All is the right with the world. 💙
What a wet day. Traveller Heron's human got drenched while carrying Traveller in a waterproof bag so that they could lounge around enjoying coffee and whiskey by the fire.

One of the most ancient lineages of Heronkind, and yet some of the most complex outfits.

Imagine the creatures that lived, but are no longer around, unknown to us.
From our #birding trip to #Brazil last August, the impressive #RufescentTigerHeron is named for its reddish-brown neck and head and coarse barred pattern particularly seen in the juvenile bird (second image). 🪶🌿🇧🇷 #brazilbirds #avesbrasil #birdinginbrazil #pantanal

Believe in yourself.
Never give up.
And you too could swallow an ARMOURED Catfish whole.

This Great Blue Heron took a bit to maneuver this large armored catfish into the right position to swallow it down. 🪶

A fish this size, is worth investing a lot of your valuable time in...
#CollectingFood is the #BirdOfTheDay theme today. I watched this great blue heron tackle this huge carp for about 20 minutes. There were several times where the fish was dropped into the water only to be caught again. Now, THAT’S a MEAL!

White and dark Pacific Reef Heron occur over most its range, with a greater proportion of dark birds toward the north and south extremes of the range and the white morph being more common in the tropics, perhaps associated with coral reefs. 🖤 🤍 1/2 🧵

We've always said if there were more #HeronArt on the walls the world would be a better place. 💙 🌏
"The thought before flight" - finished my white-faced heron at the Hutt Estuary. I ended up lengthening the beak - the trade-off with painting freehand rather than tracing a reference: more freedom, but occasionally some wonky proportions. Oil on stretched canvas.

Over-acting chipmunk!

Overdoing its 30 seconds of fame!
A velociraptor.. I mean great blue heron… creating quite a stir among us observers, picking chipmunks off a trail

First catch your fish - -
Then work out how to eat it! 🍽️
@robcrank68.bsky.social has set today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme as #CollectingFood, birds with food in their beaks. This juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron caught a Black Bullhead, but that was just the beginning of the struggle. Those fine spines are no joke! #birds #digiscoping

Two herons at WWT Barnes last Saturday: Bob the famous heron from the otters’ pen, and a younger heron who appears to be sunbathing. Feels a bit early in the year for that. I think I can also see another heron in the background to photo 2.

Larry Heron doing the Larry thing.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay prompt is #CollectingFood (birds with food in their beaks), so here is Larry, one of the local #GreatBlueHerons, keeping down the invasive goldfish population. (There are multiple Larrys, but no one will admit that.)

A very successful Heron found across the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.

Loves grassland and open savanna, and happy in urban areas where it nests using human activities for protection from predators.

Feeds on worms, scorpions, rats and frog. 🪱 🦂 🐀 🐸

Choosing the day to lay your eggs is life and death, risk and reward. Do you risk laying early - to give your chicks a head start over others and the longest time to mature before the next winter?
Blue herons nesting in a cottonwood tree. Hopefully no eggs yet with the cold weather coming.
