In olden days people saw Heron as some of the saddest, wretched, depressed creatures. Perhaps they just saw themselves reflected?

Today people who stop to watch describe us as meditating, thoughtful, wise, and seeing the world better than most. Again, reflections. 💙 (1804)

ALTHOUGH the Heron is of a long, lank, auk- ward ſhape, yet its plumage gives it on the whole an agreeable appearance; but when ſtripped of its

The Heron is defcribed by Buffon as exhibiting the picture of wretchedneſs, anxiety, and indigence, condemned to ſtruggle perpetually with mifery and want, and fickened by the reſtleſs cravings of a famiſhed appetite, &c. However faithful this in- genious naturaliſt may have been in pourtraying the appearance of the Heron, yet others are not in- clined to adopt his fentiments in defcribing its habits and manners, or to agree with him in opinion that it is one of the moſt wretched of animated beings.

It is probable that it fuffers no more than other birds, many fpecies of which employ equal atten- tion in looking for their prey, and it is not un- likely that the Heron derives pleaſure from it in- ſtead of pain. This bird, however, is of a melan- choly deportment, a filent and patient creature; and will, in the moſt ſevere weather, ſtand motionleſs a long time in the water, fixed to a ſpot, in appear- ance like the ſtump or root of a tree, waiting for its prey, which conſiſts of frogs, water-newts, eels, and other kinds of fish; and it is alſo ſaid that it will devour field-mice.

Never be predictable.

Herons do seem to lie down very occasionally. Rest. Cooling.

We've seen perhaps 20 shared photos of such, over the last 8 years. Heroneer Lori's is the first video we've seen of it happening.

It's rare but happens. And always strange to see!

Most of the reports we've seen when it was very hot, and guess was Heron resting or cooling by using the cooler ground.

The Nankeen Night Heron is closely related to the Black Crowned Night Heron and they have hybridized in Java and Borneo where their ranges overlap.

A night time hunter, day time rooster, apart during breeding when 24x7 food is required fir the hungry Heron chicks!
