It feels like barely-leaking resentment of the mainstream stuff lol. Meanwhile, most of the best mainstream things are actually things that took risks/innovations and packaged them into mass market concepts and appeal.

Feel like no one ever points that maybe one of the biggest ways Japan progressed scarily quickly in the video game industry was Japan's small geographical size. That allows creators to quickly meet up and collab/show progress in an era before widespread internet.

I imagine the UK was also that.

For gamers who aren't in game dev, you should know that we are in one of the worst periods in game dev history in terms of industry stability and the reason you're not seeing that play out through products is because the average development window of games is 3-7 years so it hasn't reached you yet.

Halo 1 and 2 Anniversary does allow you to swap between the old and new graphics at the press of a button. Mechanics are the same but yeah, that would be cool.

Youtube has announced that all low-res videos (i.e. older ones) are to be automatically AI upscaled to HD.
Creators can opt-out on a per video basis (but the channel may be long abandoned).

When researching props or behind the scenes, old videos are useful, but not if upscaling produces artefacts.

Good Lord, that part where you have to go to VERY SPECIFIC, UNMARKED PLACES like across water in a well for the blue ghost to reveal stuff to progress was actually really stupid. Genuinely awful.

RuneScape is holding a vote to get rid of the most harmful microtransactions in the game. This is by far the biggest thing players can do to help enact long-term change in the game.

Nobody understands not to throw the baby out with the bathwater lol. We can acknowledge Mario 64's groundbreaking impact while also saying 3D games have still been popping off years before it, like Daytona USA (1994 versus Mario 64's 1996).

Then yeah 2016 was rough. I still enjoyed Star Fox Zero and Color Splash, warts and all, and Sun/Moon and Robobot are legit, but by and large it was really rough.
