What happens when we are constantly forced to witness the world's pain? @angelaarnold777.bsky.social captures the creeping anxiety in "watching too much news." A deeply resonant piece for our time.

A quote graphic from the poem "watching too much news" by Angela Arnold. The quote reads: "now there is only a seeping a crawling: terrors of world of the madness in us"

Fall Song

It is a dark fall day.
The earth is slightly damp with rain.
I hear a jay.
The cry is blue.

“You renounced the world so it wouldn’t leave first.” A poem by Richard Siken.
VOLTA

It was getting very late. I waited for a different ending. I held my breath. June, July. The following July. It didn't swerve. I expected it to swerve, that's the promise, the twist at the end, how it pulls against the way it drives, black ice in moonlight. Something happened and I turned toward you. Something happened and you turned away. You didn't turn back. Listen, this is important. I'm sorry I scared you but I didn't die. You don't get to stay mad about it. You were shitty and you doubled down and stayed down, investing in it. You renounced the world so it wouldn't leave first. It worked. If you can't set it down then fall on your knees and feel the weight of it. I was right about everything. If it's any consolation, I'll never forgive you. You're welcome. Let awe end. Just like that. Fair enough.

“One Frog” by Kyla Houbolt, from her forthcoming book, *Becoming Altar* asterismbooks.com/product/beco... @luaz.bsky.social
One Frog

Tonight one frog sings outside. It's no country for rain. I live far away, but I can hear this one frog, it's a loud frog, alone in some creek or other, in a county of two lane roads that twist in the dark. Still there is comfort here because somewhere glimmering among the darkened trees is a lighted window. An old man and his nephew sit inside, whittling. They're making toys. One makes a small cart with rolling wheels; the other makes a dog with a wagging tail. There are no children nearby, not even in the neighboring counties, so one might wonder who the toys are for.
But the old man and his nephew don't seem concerned; they just keep whittling. Occasionally one of them smiles. The shavings go into the fire. The frog sings. The roads twist in the dark. The creek is low. One day it might rain.

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."

When someone (here, the interviewer) doesn't understand that "content" is not Art.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Also, you were a kid. Were you paying attention to the prevalence of autism? No. You were not.
