omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

anyway one of the many reasons to support smaller publishers with a niche they do really well is they're generally publishing books they really care about rather than throwing a thousand titles at the market to see what sticks

wait until they realize the capitalism they’ve internalized has harmed the victims they advocated for whereas poetry has saved some of them
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

This but if we could also have hot showers. Can't go back to before hot showers...
just for the record, I would much prefer to live in a time where all it takes to support hundreds of good local jobs is to wake up every day and buy a newspaper for a nickel from a legally employed minor with a cool hat

I don't have snow or bitter cold. Just endless grey chill. I would like to talk to the owner.
Everyone else has snow, but we just have the bitter cold. I would like to talk to the manager. ❄️

every time I see an A-list actor in an ad for some slot machine phone game, I think about how Bill Murray's character in Lost in Translation doing advertisements is framed as basically the highest form of humiliation an actor could go through.

not sure how to square ‘no one person can be reasonably expected to pay for every media subscription’ with ‘sorely underpaid writers need to make a living’ but my inclination is not to locate that problem with any of the broke ass people on either end of the complaint

The people who think the Bible, which was written by mystics, priests, and poets, means only what it literally says are the same people who think the Constitution, which was written by lawyers, cannot possibly mean what it literally says.
Exactly. If they meant freed people, they would have written, "freed people." Instead, they wrote, "all persons" because they meant all persons.

This debate is idiotic.
