An intro to Community Defense (ComDef)

What is Community Defense, and how does it differ from Self Defense?

This thread will go into a brief explanation that we hope will encourage others to take brave action in the physical world around them.

Tonight @ Sacramento City Hall:
📍 SACRAMENTO, CA

Lavender Angels were out tonight distributing last-minute flyers in support of tomorrow’s vigil for Alvin Prasad, put together by his daughter Andrea Prasad.

Alvin was recently hospitalized in a coma after being viciously beaten in a brazen hate crime in Lavender Heights.

Terroristic threats about baptizing people in fire while standing across from the Sac LGBT center.

Do you recognize them? They were accosting locals and customers in the Queer district, Lavender Heights, across the street from the Sac LGBT Center

They were seen wrestling a trans woman down and filming it until a crowd chased them off.

These people need an actual life. How sad is this? Devoting your life to being bothered by what OTHERS do that doesn't affect them or anyone else.

📌 Terrible for self defense.
Tonight on “what not to use for self defense” we’ll go down our list.

Our number one offender goes to “Wasp Spray.” Just because it says “black flag” doesn’t make it a comrade.

DON’T use wasp spray in lieu of pepper spray or other capscacin/OC alternatives.

📌 Great for self defense.
We’ve personally taste tested most OTC pepper sprays, and our recommendation this season is Sabre Red.

For the ouchie, burning, coughing, blinding, rocks-in-your-eye feeling we all know and love.

Give the gift of Sabre Red to a transphobe this season. From our family, to yours. 💜

So long as our communities are criminalized, and our defense is criminalized, it is just and right to for our communities to form defense coalitions, teams and affinities to struggle against and resist external aggression.

We encourage you to do so, and we’re here to help.

ComDef work, under these context, could be most accurately be defined as “popular insurgency”. For no ComDef work withstands without community support, nor does it continue to be ComDef to operate within the confines of policing, it could be easily defined as “criminals protecting criminals.”

Community defense work itself cannot work in tandem with law enforcement, by its very nature. By definition, law enforcement is an external aggressor occupying, enslaving and executing our communities — and to work with them, by collaboration or capitulation, defines you as part of these threats.

Community Defense is the way we apply self defense to the collective self and apply redundancies, bandages and armor to our causes & movements, as active participants of the communities facing external attack.

This is not, however, community policing, nor should it be.

ComDef work typically involves the ID, interruption and often removal of bad actors, violent agents & institutional oppression inside our communities.

This includes learning of threats perceived by our community, reacting to them, unlearning ways in which we harm our own, and sharing our processes.

When we view self defense as a concept, what we see are skills which increase the resilience of the self, a discipline of safety & avoiding negative encounters, personal training and goals which reflect the safety of the self.

Community Defense is a little more abstract.

That said, there are distinct differences between what one would consider self defense, or defense of the self, versus community defense, which pertain to activities which keeps our broader communities safer against bad actors, violent attackers and institutional oppression.

By participating in skill sharing, resource distribution, the exchange of written & oral knowledge, and the granting of tools to survive threatening encounters, members of an affected community increase their likelihood of survival every day.

Simplified, an organized community is a safer community.

We believe resilient communities are safer communities, better equipped to survive the mortal dangers of institutional violence which otherwise alienates & isolates attacks against us as unpreventable “random acts of violence.”

We know better than this fairytale myth and work accordingly.
