According to Catholic Social Teaching in their Three Basic Principles of Catholic Social Teaching on Immigration, "A country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration" [2], but this right is coupled with the duty to "regulate its borders with justice and mercy" [2] and those fleeing for their lives "to sustain their lives and the lives of their families." [2]

Pope John Paul II was very vocal about the plight of refugees and asylum seekers, emphasizing the need for a more humane approach to migration and the importance of welcoming, among others, the stranger and the poor as he stated in his Evangelium Vitae, "And how can we fail to consider the violence against life done to millions of human beings, especially children, who are forced into poverty, malnutrition and hunger because of an unjust distribution of resources between peoples and between social classes?" Likewise, Pope Francis has been a strong advocate for the rights and dignity of asylum seekers and refugees. In his writings and speeches, he has consistently emphasized the need to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate migrants and refugees. This was prominent in his message for the 108th World Day of Migrants and Refugees[3], celebrated on September 25, 2022, and centered around the theme "Building the Future with Migrants and Refugees." Wherein, he emphasized the importance of inclusivity and need to build a future with migrants and refugees; recognizing their ongoing contribution to society and promoting their integral human development.
“No one must be excluded. God’s plan is essentially inclusive and gives priority to those living on the existential peripheries. Among them are many migrants and refugees, displaced persons, and victims of trafficking. The Kingdom of God is to be built with them, for without them it would not be the Kingdom that God wants. And this, when done with awareness and responsibility, is a grave sin. Let us not forget what the Bible tells us: “You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him” (Ex 22:21). The orphan, the widow and the stranger are the quintessential poor whom God always defends and asks to be defended." [6]
Currently, Catholic Charities agencies offer a range of services to asylum seekers and refugees, including food, clothing, shelter, transportation support, immigration legal services, and case management. Focusing on advocating for just and fair policies that help people reach their full potential and has served over 608,000 vulnerable people on the move via welcoming and integration-specific programming. Additionally, Humanitarian Corridor initiatives in Italy have brought over 6,000 people to Europe since 2016, providing them with housing, education, and work opportunities.
