It seems significant to me that it’s an almost purely negative and individualized expression while illicit work has strategic significance in many sectors of Western economies. An openly hypocritical and vicious social compact around all this has long existed imo.

imo I do think Plato envisioned an activist and experimental role for philosophy in polities/social policy formation. You don’t necessarily have to believe the seventh letter; Callicles could be an author stand-in. But Kallipolis is bottomless irony and clear metaphor for social structure of drives.
