Makes more sense to me that the first generation American (or anywhere) would be born IN the US.

I was just curious what the actual definition would be if I looked it up. I didn't expect it to be confusing!

If you want world news in the US, you have to actively search for it. That is far easier than it used to be, but it requires effort to find reliable news these days. So many people just don't bother - not only in the US.

I spent a few years in the US & the only real international news (on TV) was because we had BBC America & got BBC World News.
24/7 cable news channels do cover some news stories - prob far more than 90s news did - but it is still almost always from an American's perspective, like in your example.

I thought the same.
Apparently it's unclear.
Google result for search on definition of "first generation (American) immigrant". Three results show there can be multiple definitions, including a person born in the US to foreign-born parents and also a foreign-born naturalised US citizen.

The world would be a better place if everyone had this level of compassion.

She said it all.

America right now: what if the worst person you know who was also the dumbest person you know was in charge of a critical government agency?

A level isn't a degree.
Would US high school/ college (not university) students be able to discuss immigration enforcement around the world?

A level students *should* be reading news, esp politics students, but not everyone reads international news.

Americans see very little international news.

1/ Small acts of defiance…✊

Yesterday, my husband and I went out to dinner with our BFFs to a local diner. It was still early bird special time so you know it was filled with old white people.

US education authorities equate a US high school diploma w/ exams we sit across Europe at age 16.
Exams we sit at 18 are 1st/2nd year university level US.

They do international equivocations when people move there.

My statement on Middle East peace
A white graphic with a blue border includes the following text:

My Statement on Middle East Peace
October 9, 2025

After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.

George Takei, “Those who ban books fear ideas that set people free. But censorship doesn’t just silence authors—it steals our freedom to learn, to question, to know ourselves and each other. This #BannedBooksWeek, stand up for the freedom to read. Every story matters. Every voice counts.”

Praying that the latest developments in the Middle East will lead to the real results we all hope to see: an end to the suffering and destruction, the return of all remaining hostages, and meaningful beginnings toward a lasting peace.

The ineffective communication strategy from the Labour Party (& US Democrats) is frustrating.
You'd think 'we' might have learned from the past decade of US media, but apparently not.

Official FB, Instagram and X accounts of the Oregon GOP posted images of riots and police stating “Portland is so out of control that the city is “burning to the ground”. The images were actually from other countries. They have to lie to support their position. 🤬
