Let's shut down this fascist bastard's megaphone in the UK and EU!
gcarty80.bsky.social
There's someone in one of the web forums I frequent who is certainly like that (thinking Britain is overpopulated).

I guess it's no coincidence that his chosen screen name there is of a land feature in the Lake District: don't some places there suffer from acute over-tourism?

I've noticed that just as there's an economic Impossible Trinity (fixed exchange rates, free movement of capital, national monetary sovereignty: pick two!) there's also a demographic Impossible Trinity (high life expectancy: high workers/retirees ratio, stable or falling population: pick two!)

My original point is that someone (like Powell in 1968) who opposed immigration _in spite of net immigration being negative at the time_ is clearly motivated by racism rather than fears of overpopulation.
gcarty80.bsky.social
Powell was indeed a racist, who believed that non-white immigration would lead to inter-community violence because (in his view) non-white immigrants could never truly become British.
gcarty80.bsky.social
Powell was an ethnonationalist who fundamentally believed that no non-white person could ever truly be British.

But my point in labelling him a racist is that he opposed migration for changing Britain's ethnic make-up, not for simply increasing its raw population size (as it wasn't at the time).

Why would (overwhelmingly white) Eastern European immigrants meet with hostility from racists, as opposed to from White Van Men who see them as direct economic competitors?

And Russian soldiers themselves fight for money, as any look at the Russian army's recruitment ads will demonstrate.
gcarty80.bsky.social
Was EU Freedom of Movement really so generally unpopular, as opposed to being unpopular with specific voter demographics (*cough* White Van Man) or being seen as a trojan horse that Germany et al would use to flood Britain with Syrian refugees?
gcarty80.bsky.social
If by "the last immigration panic" you mean Powell's Rivers of Blood speech, then wasn't that explicitly racist, rather than driven by "Britain is full" overpopulation concerns?

All transportation to Sakhalin is maritime: it's an island!
gcarty80.bsky.social
Britain and Portugal were maritime empires not land empires.
gcarty80.bsky.social
Was this largely enabled by the fact that early movements hostile to non-white immigration (eg the National Front of the 1970s) were often also sympathetic to Hitler's Nazis?
gcarty80.bsky.social
They're obsequious to wealthy Westerners, but treat their non-Western immigrants little better than slaves.
gcarty80.bsky.social
I think "second-class citizens" is too generous to describe how Gulf Arab states treat non-white immigrants.

Farage's voters are people who love the Britain of the past while hating the Britain of the present.

So mostly the first of my two possibilities then?

Is this just a case of Reform making promises they couldn't keep, or is it a case of them actually screwing up and making the council's financial situation worse than it was?

I remember noticing how the nearest house to my local golf course had a pro-Tommy Robinson "DON'T FUND TERRORISM" sticker in its window.

While university graduates were indeed far more likely to have voted Remain, it doesn't explain the difference between Scotland and the rest of the UK, which was a result of Scotland having superior _school-age_ education (especially for the working class pre-1990).

The Holocaust _killed_ Jewish anti-Zionism, while the expulsions of Jews from the Arab world _buried_ it.
gcarty80.bsky.social
Aren't they different in one key respect: if they win a national election there's a reasonable chance that there won't BE any more free and fair elections?
gcarty80.bsky.social
Same as the reason he's big in India: "the enemy of our enemy (Islam) is our friend."
gcarty80.bsky.social
I'm guessing though that this was pre-Holocaust though?

You're saying that anti-immigration viewpoints were marginalized in the past by media self-censorship: what reason did the media have to do this?
gcarty80.bsky.social
Doesn't Liverpool's anomalously-high Remain vote in 2016 (a consequence of the city boycotting the Sun for a reason unrelated to the EU) demonstrate the influence of the mass media?
