I would be more concerned about my Mom, but she has so much family living close by to help as needed. Otherwise, my sister and I would be moving her closer to us.

My Mom (in her mid-70s) lives almost two hours away from her heart specialist and over an hour from her general physician. She lives in the same rural area as her brother and sister, who face the same distances when they need a doctor.

My life is the opposite of those things, but they fascinate me as a topic and storytelling device.

When I told my dad I was quitting my computer science major to be a writer, it was like that scene from ORANGE COUNTY:

"Why do you want to be a writer? You're not gay. You're not oppressed."
