Okay, because I need to try and re-spark some writing community joy after… *gestures at everything* how about a revisit on a way you can absolutely support authors you love for zero dollars: by dropping a low-stress, three-sentence review somewhere.

I get asked a lot for advice I'd give first time writers and honestly, it's... just get the words on the page. That's it. Don't worry about anything else until you've got the words on the page. Let that first draft be messy and glorious and fun. Deal with the rest of it later.

If you're planning on shopping during black Friday or cyber Monday, why not consider supporting artists, writers, creators? Buy a book, purchase an indie video game, commission an art piece, gift someone a Patreon. Your support means everything.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Get something good to eat like a burger, pizza, or chicken fried rice. Then go outside or look out your window if it's raining. Lay down with your eyes closed. Three hours of rest and recuperation so you don't burn out on dopamine.

That's it.

Could be you're not sure what happens next in the story or you're not feeling what you'd planned and can't see a way through. I keep multiple projects running so I can take a "break" on one project by writing on another.

Your brain might have too much going on because of life. Take a break. 😻

Really take time to enjoy your hobbies and have conversations with those you trust with your writing. And don't push yourself into anything if you're not ready.

Also true of high-energy sequences. I wrote an action sequence today and was EXHAUSTED afterward!
#WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall Writing emotionally charged scenes can leave you exhausted and raw. If you're writing a tough scene today, make sure to do something kind for yourself afterward. Let us know how you wind down after writing.

One of the most satisfying parts of running #WeeknightWriters is that I get to watch books grow from the seeds of ideas into fully published novels

SM Reiher's The Mycelium Palace is one such book, written by a community member who's been with us almost since the beginning
My friend SM Reiher is FINALLY releasing their epic science fantasy (with strong horror elements) novel, which I've edited at many stages & watched grow from idea to full book, in December and you can PREORDER IT NOW

I can't force writing when it doesn't come, so prompts and such don't work for me. What helps is doing something else entirely: sleep, work, listen to music, go outside, etc. I tend to get unstuck in consistent places away from the desk, like the shower or driving on my commute.

Free up your brain. Take a break.
Actively seek out boredom, it helps wonders to give your mind breathing space.
Or engage with other sources of creativity and inspiration, submerge yourself in what gives you energy and motivation.
I personally always return to my favorite music playlist for that.

I do 1 of 3 things.

1. I outline what needs to happen. i embellish the outline. I fill it out more, until I've tricked my brain into writing it.

2. I switch projects. I always have multiple projects.

3. I ask myself how could make this sequence more cool? How could I make it more fun to read?

Having my debut novel transformed (partially) into an audiobook in two parts, hope to do the full thing: (thevoice.dog?episode=aces...). It's revitalized me like nothing else before.

Publishing its sequel. Maybe submitting a noir that's my baby. Hats off to voice actors and sound designers!

Find a strategy that's good for you. X# of words a day, taking a break, working on something different, reading, movies, getting away fully. Ultimately, everyone is different and you kinda gotta learn what your brain responds to the best and go with it. But don't spiral, that won't help at all.
