I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

Yup, the thing about vote-by-mail is that there is always a paper trail. Random precinct audits would find any discrepancy with the scanning or tallying systems.

Oh, winning a defamation case is almost always nearly impossible. The utility would be in the discovery process.

It was a terrible business model. The idea was to be Westlaw or LexisNexis for doctors. But attorneys bill their clients for research while doctors don't, so they were reluctant to pay the high subscription and usage fees. We also had a similar service for dentists in collaboration with the ADA.

It was on the short-lived "Health Information Network" which was delivered using ITT-Dialcom's text-based dialup timesharing system. We shipped VT-100 terminals to subscribers, mostly doctors. CDC would fax us a copy of MMWR a day in advance and we had to type the text into the system by hand.

The callous disregard this administration has for public health is stunning. MMWR was down for a few weeks in January, and I was relieved to see it back online. But not at all surprised to see it shut down again, presumably on the thesis that what we don't know can't hurt them.

Just in case: MMWR is a key frontline indicator for outbreaks. The first subtle hint of AIDS was in that publication. This is the pale horse that Death rides.

One of my first jobs after college (circa 1985) was creating and maintaining the first online version of the MMWR, and I can't overemphasize how much they drummed it into our heads how important this publication was, and how important it was for us to get online right.

Hey, serious question for lawyers out there: could the City of Portland or a group of downtown Portland businesses sue the president or his administration for defamation? Local businesses have almost certainly suffered economic harm from these constant malicious lies.

He keeps repeating this plywood thing. Weird. So, maybe he's just confusing plywood with mass timber? They're doing some pioneering construction with cross-laminated mass timber in Portland these days, including the tallest wood building in the US!
