Teesside’s freeport, initiated in 2021 under Rishi Sunak, has cost £560 million far exceeding the standard £25 million allocation (22 times the standard £25m).
90% profits go to the private sector.
This clearly shows the UK model of State aid post-Brexit is utterly corrupt.

Celebrating 200 years since John Stevens Henslow became Professor of Botany at Cambridge.

It's almost 200 years to the day since Henslow took an oath before the Vice Chancellor as 'King's Reader in Botany' on 10 October 1825.

This is the feast of Paulinus, Bishop of York, d. 644. 🕯️ Though the extensive Paulinus material is in Bede, I realized we've never looked at the sole surviving MS of the Anonymous of Whitby's Life of Gregory the Great, St. Gall 567. Here's the passage about the baptism of Edwin from that text.

Even given all that Biggar writes about the universality of slavery and the complicity of Africans, three things might be said. First, Britain played a key part and, however others may want to respond to their own history, it is morally responsible to face up to our own heritage. Second, as a Tory, he might have made more of Burke’s view that society is a partnership not just between the living, but between the living, the dead, and those still to be born. Third, guilt is not the only spur to action. There are the obligations that we owe one another irrespective of any personal responsibility for atrocities in the past.
