Holy shit! A Discord update just freed me from age verification hell!

To prepare in case this happens to you?

1. join the Fediverse somewhere
2. get Matrix Org/SchildiChat
3. put these accounts in your bio
4. export your data and videos/photos from everywhere else

Corporations can't be trusted.

And with the move back to block funding by stealth - that is, "foundational" supports and 1:3 ratio funding? With the big providers cramming ever more people in, without increasing staff nunbers?

Those created jobs will slowly disappear.

Taking all the economic benefit of the NDIS with it.
gslakes.bsky.social
Well, yeah, I suppose it is (was?) pretty good at job creation. Individualised support requires more workers than (state/NFP run) institutions do.

The trouble is, the workers *and* the participants get exploited now, too.

As that's inevitable when opening up a basic need - care - to profiteering.
gslakes.bsky.social
The NDIS sadly is a system for the benefit of the providers. Not the disabled people who need it.

The most vulnerable amongst us are the ones who suffer the most from the greed - and neglect - of these people, unfortunately.

As a disabled person and a disability advocate? I know this all too well.
gslakes.bsky.social
I'm not one for punitive justice, but by the usual standard here?

That's a slap on the wrist.

If this had been, say, an abled child treated so negligently, so abusively?

Criminal charges. For sure.

Which just shows how little the legal system values disabled people's lives, unfortunately.
gslakes.bsky.social
You know I'm not big on punitive justice, but that's a slap on the wrist.

Which shows how little they value disabled people's lives, unfortunately.
gslakes.bsky.social
The UN said recently that paying disabled people subminimum wages is modern slavery. Because disabled people effectively have no choice in their employer.

Given that Work For The Dole is *even more* coercive, and just as underpaid?

I reckon it's a fair call to consider that slavery too.
gslakes.bsky.social
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have to check it out 🙂
gslakes.bsky.social
I really should get everyone I share a family Spotify account with to use Bandcamp or other ways to pay artists for their music.

'cause Spotify effectively doesn't. And hasn't for a while now.

As for the classics? Or the guilty faves, who don't need (or deserve) the money?

Spotube can help there.

"The purpose of a system is what it does."

"The cruelty is the point."

Social "security" systems exist to punish the un(der)employed. To deliberately create misery.

As desperate people will take any job they can. Which keeps pay low, and profits high.

"Mutual obligations" are class warfare.
thedescenters.bsky.social
The frustrating part about this lie is that mutual obligations and the low rate of payment have actually been proven several times to create material barriers to this, even if 100% employment was actually possible, and under capitalism it is simply not.

Payman: Why are you maintaining a system that "The Labor *party* platform notes can be punitive, cause stress and anxiety, and can be a barrier to employment?"

Senator Jess Walsh responds by explaining that the Labor *government* believes the best form of welfare is a job 👍

New from 404 Media: the Discord hack is every users' worst nightmare. Yesterday the hackers started posting Discord users' selfies, identity documents, email addresses, phone numbers, more. I watched in real time. This is risk of tech storing ID for age verification

A hack impacting Discord’s age verification process shows in stark terms the risk of tech companies collecting users’ ID documents. Now the hackers are posting peoples’ IDs and other sensitive informa...

The heart of it is naked insecurity. They're overvalued, we're undervalued and they know it. Genai (and the AGI cult attached to it,) is just them throwing a tantrum about it.

Amazing how just about everything bad going on can be summed up as: “the ruling class seeks world domination and total control of everything and everyone and are salty at people who dare to be creative and themselves.”

New article:)

I encourage everyone to read up on operation inglenook.

Trans women getting incarcerated in men's prisons isn't some trumpian anomaly. It's the policy of the australian labor party.

“We still live in an age where migrant sex workers are portrayed as gullible and weak damsels in distress, rather than struggling, disadvantaged women just playing the cards they have.”

Natalie Feliks on Operation Inglenook and its echoes of the ICE raids in the US.

Racially-motivated raids, trans women being placed under male confinement without trial, and police-sanctioned sexual abuse are not exclusive to foreign countries or the Trump administration. They are...

I highly recommend having *some* presence on Mastodon, Website League, Friendica, or other "Fediverse" social media.

As corporate social media will keep forcing people to identify themselves. And ban everything that the fash don't like.

You can avoid that on the Fediverse as it's non-corporate.

Hello! I'm gonna try my best to organize the important basic info here before hopefully making some sort of Actual Guide. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Ah, damn. A heads up that Australian immigration policy is ableist, too.

If your friend is deemed likely to cost "too much" to Medicare? Then any visa application will be knocked back.

(Ever since Howard, we've been incredibly cruel here.)

I'm on NDIS too - it just keeps getting worse and worse 😞
gslakes.bsky.social
Federal Labor could have just said - "Queensland Labor reviewed this a few months ago, it's fine. The evidence is clear: it helps trans kids."

By announcing their own review, they said "we agree that there's something of concern here". And a 2026 review date means no rebuttal for a year or more.
gslakes.bsky.social
Happy to chat via DM? But a heads up - we don't have anything built yet.

I'd highly recommend your friend try to find an employer to sponsor them for a working visa. It's the fastest way in, short of spending $50k. (IIRC.)

Because (AFAIK) no one's made a successful asylum claim like that yet.
gslakes.bsky.social
I'm in Queensland. The LNP will likely make HRT for under 18s illegal soon. Not just banned from the public system.

Federal Labor announcing their own unnecessary review shows they're going to play this game too.

The eugenics campaign they're waging via huge NDIS cuts shows they're fash, too.
gslakes.bsky.social
Absolutely! Hopefully the tiny home project can expand beyond the equivalent of Phase 1 here.

Would love to be able to take in as many trans, queer, neurodivergent, and/or disabled people as possible.

We are stronger together.

And we're going to need every bit of strength we can get ✊
gslakes.bsky.social
I'm part of a project trying to make something like Transtown happen in Australia. And we've got land already.

We're about to start building the equivalent of Phase 1, too.

If we can figure out how to get people here on visas, feed them, and then buy more land?

We'll take in as many as we can.
gslakes.bsky.social
I'm part of a project trying to make something like Transtown happen in Australia.

Now, Australia's far from perfect - and it's getting worse - but it's a lot better here than the UK or the US!

If we can figure out how to get people visas? We'll take as many as will fit on the land we have.
